Titans Suffer Defeat In Regular Season Finale

UW-River Falls snapped a 14-game losing streak to the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh football team after running 117 offensive plays and possessing the ball for more than 40 minutes on the way to a 28-21 victory during the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference finale Saturday (Nov. 13) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (6-3, 4-3 WIAC), ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III by D3football.com, did not trail until UW-River Falls' Kole Hinrichsen passed to Charlie Huschka for a 21-yard touchdown and a 20-14 Falcons lead with 6:44 left in the third quarter.

The Titans answered less than two minutes later on a 4-yard touchdown run from Peter MacCudden. Jaydon Haag's ensuing extra point provided UW-Oshkosh a 21-20 lead with 4:48 to play in the third period.

UW-River Falls (8-2, 5-2 WIAC) then reclaimed a 28-21 advantage following a 7-yard touchdown pass from Hinrichsen to Alex Traxler that capped a 16-play, 80-yard drive and a successful two-point conversion run from Ben Beise at the 9:52 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Falcons' Michael Brown intercepted a pass near the goal line on the next UW-Oshkosh possession, and UW-River Falls ran the remaining 7:19 off the clock to preserve the victory. The Falcons appeared to lose a fumble near midfield with 2:47 left in the game. However, the referee ruled there was an inadvertent whistle that ended the play. The Falcons went on to convert a fourth-and-2 with 2:12 remaining before taking a knee three times to pick up their first win over the Titans since a 13-10 overtime decision Oct. 1, 2005, in Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh took a 7-0 lead on 74-yard touchdown pass from Kobe Berghammer to Tony Steger with 5:52 to play in the first quarter before UW-River Falls pulled within 7-6 on a Luke Fugate 1-yard touchdown run followed by a missed extra point.

The Titans extended their advantage to 14-6 on a 69-yard touchdown pass from Berghammer to Trae Tetzlaff with 11:59 remaining in the second period, but the Falcons responded with a touchdown of their own on a 6-yard pass from Hinrichsen to Jager Reissmann with 6:04 to play before intermission.

UW-River Falls concluded the contest with advantages of 556-333 in yards, 34-10 in first downs and 40:56 to 19:04 in time of possession. The Falcons went 14 of 27 on third downs and 6-for-6 on fourth downs while outgaining the Titans, 258-82, on the ground.

UW-Oshkosh's Berghammer completed 11 of 25 passes for 251 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed seven times for a team leading 51 yards.

Steger, who hauled in his team best sixth touchdown catch of the year, finished the contest with four receptions for 113 yards. Tetzlaff added three catches for 95 yards to go along with his fifth touchdown of the season.

In a game that featured 68 UW-River Falls rushing attempts, UW-Oshkosh had six players with at least 11 tackles, including Tory Jandrin with 17 stops, Carson Raddatz 16 and Jacob Edwards 15. Kyle Scharenbroch added 12 tackles for the Titans, who also received 11 stops apiece from Brandon Hughes and Eli Tranel. Brody Milz registered UW-Oshkosh's lone sack while Scharenbroch intercepted a pass.

UW-River Falls' Hinrichsen was 29 of 44 passing for 249 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He also racked up a team leading 127 rushing yards on 23 carries.

Fugate rushed 34 times for 113 yards and a score for a UW-River Falls offense that saw eight Falcons catch passes, including Reissmann with nine receptions for 50 yards and Ben Beise with five grabs for a team best 59 yards.

Andy Metcalf and Bailey Germain registered five tackles apiece to pace the UW-River Falls defense that created two turnovers and tallied a pair of sacks. Calvin Rosen recovered a fumble for the Falcons while Jake Halsey and Ted Androli recorded sacks.

With the victory UW-River Falls kept alive its chances of playing in the inaugural Isthmus Bowl that pits the top teams that do not qualify for the Division III Championship from both the WIAC and College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The first Isthmus Bowl will be held next Saturday (Nov. 20) in Verona.
