Warhawks Spoil Titans' Return To Their Home Venue

UW-Whitewater scored 22 unanswered points in the second quarter and pulled away for a 32-13 win over UW-Oshkosh during a battle of nationally ranked Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football rivals Saturday (Oct. 16) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh (3-2, 1-2 WIAC), ranked 18th in the NCAA Division III by D3football.com, claimed a 7-0 lead at the 3:45 mark of the first quarter following a 2-yard shovel pass for a touchdown from Kobe Berghammer to Justin Kasuboski.

Third-ranked UW-Whitewater (6-0, 3-0 WIAC) knotted the score at 7 on a Max Meylor 7-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Holte with 11:21 left in the second quarter before taking the lead for good 15 seconds later as UW-Oshkosh returner Jaylen Grant was called for throwing a forward pass in the end zone on the ensuing kickoff.

UW-Whitewater then upped its advantage to 15-7 following a 5-yard touchdown pass from Meylor to Peete. However, Warhawks placekicker Matt Maldonado pulled the extra point wide left to keep it a one-possession deficit for UW-Oshkosh.

The Warhawks later capitalized on a Ryan Liszka interception at the UW-Oshkosh 27-yard line, reaching the end zone five plays later on a 1-yard run by Peete for a 22-7 cushion with 39 seconds remaining in the first half.

UW-Oshkosh, conducting its home opener, pulled within 22-13 with 9:04 left in the third quarter after Trae Tetzlaff snared a 15-yard pass from Berghammer onehanded in the corner of the end zone. The Titans' two-point conversion try failed on an incomplete pass.

The Titans, still trailing by nine points, mounted a 14-play drive that culminated in a missed field goal by Jaydon Haag from 41 yards out at the 12:57 mark of the fourth quarter.

Maldonado put the game away with a 36-yard field goal that capped a 12-play, 59-yard UW-Whitewater drive that drained 8:03 off the clock with just under five minutes to play. The Warhawks, whose decisive drive featured 10 consecutive carries for a total of 52 yards, concluded the scoring on a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown by Liszka at the 1:26 mark.

The loss snaps UW-Oshkosh's 27 game regular season home winning streak. Saturday's game was a rematch of the 2019 regular season finale – the Titans' most recent prior home game – that UW-Oshkosh won by a 24-20 to clinch a share of the WIAC title with UW-Whitewater and secure the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Whitewater finished Saturday's contest with advantages of 321-217 in yards, including 211-119 passing, 16-15 in first downs and 34:00 to 26:00 in time of possession. The Warhawks created the only two turnovers of the game – both on Liszka interceptions.

UW-Oshkosh's Berghammer went 14 of 22 passing for 97 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Berghammer, who has thrown for eight touchdowns on the year, produced his eighth multiple passing touchdown effort in 16 career games and rushed five times for 37 yards.

UW-Whitewater's Meylor ended the contest 17 of 25 passing for 211 yards with two touchdown passes. Meylor entered the day ranked third in the country in passing efficiency and sixth nationally in both completion percentage and yards per pass attempt.

Peete had 21 carries for 79 yards and two receptions for 12 yards while scoring touchdowns on the ground and via the air.

Ryan Wisniewski hauled in a game best six catches for 121 yards for the Warhawks, who also received two grabs each from Peete, Holte, Derek Kumerow and Sam DeLany.
