Wipperfurth Named WIAC's Top Football Scholar-Athlete

The WIAC has selected UW-Oshkosh receiver Cory Wipperfurth as the 2013 winner of the Max Sparger Football Scholar-Athlete Award.

Wipperfurth, a senior from DeForest, is the first UW-Oshkosh player to receive the award in 14 years and third overall. He follows the selections of Rob Stoltz in 1996 and Craig Pierstorff in 1999.

Wipperfurth owns a 3.89 grade-point average as a finance major. He is a four-time member of the University Dean's List and a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.

Earlier this fall, Wipperfurth was one of 39 NCAA Division III candidates for the National Football Foundation's William V. Campbell Trophy. The College Sports Information Directors of America also named him to the Capital One Academic All-District Six Football Team.

Wipperfurth's community service includes volunteer work for the Oshkosh Boys & Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity and Hotel Move Out Project. He is a member of UW-Oshkosh's Finance Club and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Wipperfurth started all 10 games for UW-Oshkosh this year and led the WIAC with an average of 22.6 yards per catch. He totaled 13 receptions for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Wipperfurth also rushed 12 times for 127 yards.

During the season opener against Central College (Iowa) on Sept. 7, Wipperfurth ignited UW-Oshkosh's second-half comeback victory with a 56-yard catch. Then in the fourth quarter, he scored on a 67-yard pass to tie the game.

Wipperfurth also rushed five times for 59 yards during a victory over UW-La Crosse on Oct. 12 and had a 26-yard run during a three-point loss to eventual league champion UW-Whitewater on Oct. 26.

Wipperfurth played in 34 career games, including 15 as a starter. He totaled 34 receptions for 745 yards and seven scores. Wipperfurth caught a 77-yard touchdown against the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) in the semifinal of the 2012 NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Oshkosh finished the 2013 season with an 8-2 record, including a third-place 5-2 mark in the WIAC. The Titans have posted a 28-6 record over the past three seasons.
