Mariners Down Titans In Ten Innings

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.- In the UW-Oshkosh baseball team's first extra innings contest of the season, the Titans fell to Mitchell College (Conn.), 5-4, at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven, Florida on Friday (Mar. 8)

Carter Stebane (Jr. • Brillion) sent in two of the Titans' (4-3) runs, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice fly.

LJ Waco (Sr. • Cary, Ill.) started for Oshkosh. He struck out eight batters in his 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and four walks for two runs.

The Mariners (4-1) struck first, scoring two runs on a double to right center in the bottom of the second inning.

Nick Shiu (Jr. • Gurnee, Ill.) and Stebane evened the score in the top of the fourth, recording RBIs in back-to-back at-bats. Shiu hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Zach Taylor (Sr. • Long Grove, Ill.) and Stebane hit a sacrifice fly to center field, sending Mason Kirchberg (Jr. • DeForest) home.

Two more runs scored in the top of the sixth, giving Oshkosh a 4-2 lead. Kirchberg scored Jack McNamara (So. • LaGrange, Ill.) home on a single to left field after he tripled two batters earlier. A double from Stebane then sent Taylor across the plate.

Mitchell scored a run in eighth and ninth innings to send the game to the 10th inning. Aaron Huibregtse (Jr. • Oostburg) threw the eighth inning, allowing a run on two hits and a strikeout. Brett Gaynor (Fr. • Long Grove, Ill.) came in for the ninth where he forced a flyout then gave up a triple and an RBI double before intentionally walking a batter and striking out the next two batters.

Stebane reached base on the top of the 10th with one out, but was picked off at first and Brenden Max (So. • Libertyville, Ill.) flew out to center to send it to the bottom of the inning.

A single and a stolen base for Savier Paige put him in scoring position when Justin Adorn reached on an error by Kirchberg, ending the game.

The Titans will play their third game of the Russmatt Baseball Invitational on Saturday (Mar. 9) at 8:15 a.m. central time against Buena Vista University (Iowa) (8-3) at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida. In the all-time series that began in 1968, Oshkosh is 5-2 against the Beavers.
