Titans Win Game One, Drop Game Two Against Eagles

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh baseball team (24-8, 15-5 WIAC) won the first game on Saturday 9-2 and lost the second 13-2 (7 innings) to UW-La Crosse (24-8, 15-5 WIAC).

The No. 16 Titans and No. 18 Eagles are tied for first in the WIAC headed into the final week of conference play.

Game One Recap

LJ Waco started for UWO, facing UWL's Tyler Schmitt.

Matt Scherrman hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, his seventh of the season, giving the Titans an early 1-0 lead.

Oshkosh extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth to 3-0 off Mason Kirchberg's ninth home run of the year and a single by Jake Surane.

In the bottom of the sixth, Oshkosh scored five runs, led by Kirchberg with a 2 RBI double and Connor Giusti with a 2 RBI home run, his third.

The fourth home run of the game came in the following inning, when Zach Taylor hit a solo home run over the left field fence (his eighth home run of the year).

UWL scored on two singles in the top of the eighth to try to get back in the game, but only managed the two runs in the game.

Scherrman paced UWO in the game, going three-for-four with two doubles and a home run, scoring twice, and recording an RBI.

Waco (6-0) earned the win, going 7.0 innings and allowing no runs on three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. Schmitt (4-2) was assigned the loss, pitching 6.0 innings, and allowing nine hits for eight runs (seven earned), while striking out three.

Game Two Recap

Cameron Mulvihill and Owen Deprez started for Oshkosh and La Crosse in the second game.

In the top of the first, Anthony Vivian scored two Eagles with a double to right center and Ty Hamilton sent in a another on a single up the middle.

Scherrman, the WIAC RBI leader (47), recorded an RBI in the bottom of the first for the fourth-straight game with a single to bring the Titans within a run of the Eagles.

Mac Born hit a grand slam for UWL in the top of the second inning, extending the lead to 7-1.

After going scoreless in the third and fourth, Eli Roberts' 2 RBI single and Born's 2 RBI home run led the Eagles' six-run fifth inning.

Kirchberg singled in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Scherrman, but the score sat at 13-2 after seven innings, ending there.

Scherrman went two-for-three with both an RBI and a run scored, pacing UWO. Surane hit two doubles in four at bats.

Mulvihill (5-2) lost the decision in 3.1 innings of work. He allowed seven runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four. Deprez (5-1) earned the win in 6.0 innings, giving up eight hits and a walk for two runs with five strikeouts.

Looking Forward

The Titans will return to action on Tuesday (May 2), traveling to face the Milwaukee School of Engineering (18-12, 10-8 NACC). Oshkosh dropped their first game to MSOE 4-5 on March 21.
