Titans Split With Blue Devils; Shiu Records First Career Multi-Home Run Game
MENOMONIE, Wis.- The UW-Oshkosh baseball team split their doubleheader against UW-Stout on Friday afternoon (April 14) at Wakanda Park with a 15-4 win in the first game and an 8-10 loss in the second. Nicholas Shiu recorded the first multi-home run game of his career in the first game with solo and two-run homers.
Game One Recap
Connor Brinkman took the mound for the Titans, facing off against the Blue Devils' Drew Buss.
Stout scored first in the opening game, scoring three in the bottom of the first. Jacoby Endreas hit his fourth home run of the year to right center, sending all three runs home.
Nicholas Shiu responded in the second inning, hitting a home run over the left field fence after Zach Taylor walked as the leadoff hitter.
Oshkosh took the lead in the third inning with two runs scored. Matt Scherrman singled to send Jake Surane home and Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Ethan Schreier.
The Titans increased their lead in the fourth inning to make the score 7-3. Schreier was the only batter to record an RBI, scoring Chase Marsh with a single to center. Surane scored his second run of the day when the catcher for Stout made an error on the same play. Schreier then scored a run later in the inning when the third baseman made an error. The Blue Devils got on the board for the first time since the first inning in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one on a Colin Hageman single.
Shiu hit his second home run of the game with a solo knock to left center for his first career multi-home run game. Mason Kirchberg followed immediately with a home run of his own to right field, making the score 9-4.
Oshkosh tacked six more on in the top of the sixth, led by Jake Andersen with a two-run single to center field.
Nick Loizzi came in as relief for Brinkman with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, striking out the first and only batter he saw. The Titans won the first game 15-4 in seven innings, led by Shiu, who went three-for-four with two home runs, three runs batted in and three scored. Brinkman (6-0) earned the win in 6.2 innings pitched. He struck out a season-high eight batters while allowing four runs on eight hits. Buss (1-2) was assigned the loss with seven runs allowed (six earned) on six hits and four walks while striking out three.
Game Two Recap
For game two, Matt Sorrells pitched for Oshkosh against Cooper Beving of Stout.
Taylor doubled Scherrman home in the first inning to put the Titans on the board first. Justin Sedin homered in the bottom half, giving the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead.
Stout scored twice in the second with a stolen run by Leyten Bowers and an RBI double from Parker Hagebock. The scored sat at 4-1 after the second inning.
Mason Kirchberg brought the Titans back within a run during the top of the third inning, sending Scherrman and Surane home with a single to center field.
Trey Tennessen relieved Sorrells with one out in the bottom of the third.
The Blue Devils scored four times off Tennessen in the fourth inning with two solo home runs and a 2 RBI double from Justin Schnell.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Stout scored twice more to make the score 10-3.
Connor Walters relieved Tennessen for the seventh inning and finished out the game for Oshkosh.
Oshkosh made an effort to get back in the game in the eighth inning, scoring five runs. Surane led the Titans in the inning, hitting a two-run double to right field, scoring Jack McNamara and Connor Giusti. After keeping Stout scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, the team went down in order in the top of the ninth, ending their six-game winning streak with an 8-10 loss. Kirchberg led Oshkosh in game two, going two-for-four with a walk and recorded two RBI and a run scored.
Sorrells (1-2) was assigned the loss. He pitched 2.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Beving (3-0) earned the win with 6.0 innings pitched and allowed three runs (one allowed) on four hits and five walks. He also struck out five.

The Titans will play UW-Stout tomorrow at First National Bank Field in River Falls for another doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
