Scherrman, Surane Receive All-Region Honors

UW-Oshkosh junior shortstop Matt Scherrman and sophomore second baseman Jake Surane were voted to the 2022 NCAA Division III All-Region IX Baseball Team by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Surane was named to the Second Team while Scherrman was selected to the Third Team. The All-Region honors were the first for both Titans. UW-Oshkosh has now earned 131 total ABCA All-Region accolades by 83 players since 1991.

This year's All-Region IX Team featured 15 players on the First Team, 17 on the Second Team and 18 on the Third Team. Three second basemen – one on each of the three teams – and four shortstops, including two on the Third Team, were selected to the All-Region IX Team.

Surane, an All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team performer, hit .371 this season with a team-leading 65 hits, 47 runs scored, 29 stolen bases and 18 walks to go along with 12 doubles, three triples, four home runs, 27 runs batted in, 95 total bases, a .543 slugging percentage, .439 on-base percentage and .977 fielding percentage. He led the WIAC in stolen bases while ranking fourth in triples and fifth in hits.

Surane recorded multiple hits 21 times while playing all of UW-Oshkosh's 43 games, including 42 as a starter. Surane went a combined 11-for-15 in the four-game series against Finlandia University (Mich.) on April 15-16 with 12 runs scored, a pair of home runs, seven RBIs and seven stolen bases. He was also 6-for-8 with four steals during a doubleheader versus UW-Eau Claire on April 19 before going 7-for-15 in the final three contests of the four-game series with UW-Stevens Point on May 6-7.

Surane's four stolen bases during the nightcap of a doubleheader against UW-Eau Claire on April 19 was one shy of matching the WIAC game record set by former Titan Gary Varsho in 1982. Surane also established season highs with four hits against UW-Stevens Point on May 13, and four runs scored and four RBIs in separate games versus Finlandia University on April 15.

Scherrman garnered All-WIAC First Team recognition on the way to finishing the 2022 season with a .365 batting average, 62 hits, 45 runs scored, 19 doubles, five triples, eight home runs, 56 RBIs, 115 total bases, 11 stolen bases, a .676 slugging percentage and a .430 on-base percentage. Scherrman led the conference in doubles in triples while ranking fourth in the league in runs batted in and slugging percentage, and ninth in home runs.

Scherrman, whose 19 doubles were one shy of tying the program record, drove in at least one run in 11 straight WIAC contests from April 9-24. Scherrman started all 43 games this season, collecting 21 multiple-hit efforts and driving in runs during 28 contests.

Scherrman went a combined 8-for-15 at the plate in the four-game series with Finlandia University on April 15-16 with 11 runs scored, three doubles, a home run and nine RBIs. He later went 9-for-19 versus UW-Stevens Point on May 6-7 with five doubles and four runs batted in. Schermann was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs during the series opener against UW-Platteville on April 24, then launched a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs in Platteville during the final doubleheader of the regular season on May 9. He recorded a season-high six RBIs versus UW-Whitewater on May 12.

Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) first baseman Jack Hanson was tabbed Region IX Player of the Year while Owen Boerema from University of Northwestern (Minn.) was named the region's Pitcher of the Year. Lawrence University's Chris Krepline received Region IX Coach of the Year laurels.

Scherrman and Surane were among 14 WIAC players on the 2022 All-Region IX Team as UW-Stevens Point had five selections, UW-Whitewater three, and UW-La Crosse and UW-Stout two apiece.

UW-Oshkosh compiled a 24-19 record this season, including a 16-12 WIAC mark to place fourth in the league standings. The Titans, who went on to reach the WIAC Tournament championship game for the first time since 2011, set program records with 101 steals on the basepaths and 325 strikeouts on the mound.
