Brinkman Leads Titans' Four All-WIAC Selections

UW-Oshkosh's Connor Brinkman, voted league Newcomer of the Year, along with Matt Scherrman, Jake Surane and Harry Orth were each named to the 2022 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Team.

Brinkman, a freshman pitcher, junior shortstop Scherrman and sophomore second baseman Surane were voted to the 20-member All-WIAC First Team while senior pitcher Orth was among 14 players receiving Honorable Mention recognition.

Scherrman was an All-WIAC Honorable Mention selection last season. Brinkman, Orth and Surane earned all-conference accolades for the first time. Brinkman becomes UW-Oshkosh's first recipient of the WIAC Newcomer of the Year award that debuted last season.

The All-WIAC Baseball Team is voted on by coaches based on performance in the 28 league games exclusively.

Brinkman posted a 4-3 record in conference play with a 3.04 earned run average, two saves and 43 strikeouts in 50.1 innings pitched. Brinkman ranked second in the league in innings pitched, fourth in saves, and seventh in both earned run average and strikeouts.

Brinkman tossed a seven-hit shutout with seven strikeouts at UW-Whitewater on April 4 before earning home wins against conference rivals Finlandia University (Mich.) on April 15, UW-Eau Claire on April 19 and UW-Stevens Point on May 7. He recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts without issuing a walk in six innings during the victory over Finlandia University.

Brinkman compiled a 7-3 record overall on the year with a 2.64 earned run average, two saves, a pair of complete games and 74 strikeouts in 78.1 innings pitched across 14 appearances, including 10 starts. He led the Titans pitching staff in wins and innings pitched.

Scherrman paced the WIAC in doubles and triples while ranking second in the league in RBIs, third in slugging percentage, fourth in batting average, hits and runs scored; and sixth in home runs.

Scherrman, who drove in at least one run during 11 consecutive league games from April 9-24, went a combined 8-for-15 at the plate in the four-game series with Finlandia University on April 15-16 with 11 runs scored, three doubles, a home run and nine RBIs. He later went 9-for-19 versus UW-Stevens Point on May 6-7 with five doubles and four runs batted in. Schermann went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs during the series opener against UW-Platteville on April 24 and then launched a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs in Platteville during the final doubleheader of the regular season on May 9.

On the year Scherrman produced a .365 batting average, 62 hits, 45 runs scored, 19 doubles, five triples, eight home runs, 56 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, 115 total bases, a .430 on-base percentage and a .676 slugging percentage. His 19 doubles were one shy of tying the program record. Scherrman also led the Titans in triples, RBIs, total bases and slugging percentage.

Surane hit .396 in league play with 44 hits, 31 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, three home runs, 20 runs batted in, 17 stolen bases, a .586 slugging percentage and a .468 on-base percentage. Orth had a 4-2 record against league foes with a 4.25 earned run average, two complete games and 49 strikeouts in 48.2 innings pitched. He ranked third in the conference in innings pitched and fourth in both wins and strikeouts.
