Titans Win Nightcap To Earn Doubleheader Split With Eagles

Jake Andersen and Mason Kirchberg both hit home runs in the nightcap as the UW-Oshkosh baseball team salvaged a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader split at UW-La Crosse on Sunday (May 1).

UW-Oshkosh (20-11, 14-6 WIAC) is still alone in third in the league standings after coming back for a 4-2 victory in the second contest at UW-La Crosse, which outslugged the Titans, 13-10, during the opener.

UW-La Crosse (18-14, 12-10 WIAC), which won three of four games against UW-Oshkosh last season, stays fifth in the league as it pursues a spot in the four-team conference tournament that begins May 12.

During the second game of the day, UW-La Crosse was cruising along with a 2-0 lead until Andersen blasted a two-run homer to knot the score in the top of the fifth inning. Kirchberg then hit a two-run homer of his own during the seventh frame to provide the final score.

Kirchberg's go-ahead home run made a winner out of Titans starting pitcher Will Michalski, who went the distance, scattering 10 hits and walking one with one strikeout.

Michalski (5-0), who notched his first complete game of the year and third career, pitched around two baserunners in the eighth inning and faced the tying run at the plate during the ninth frame but induced a lineout to end the game.

Jake Surane accounted for two of UW-Oshkosh's seven hits. The home runs were Andersen's third on the year and Kirchberg's first. Kirchberg becomes the ninth Titan to hit a homer this season.

The Eagles collected 10 hits, including three from Jack Olver and two by Jordan Williams. Olver went into Sunday leading the conference with a .437 batting average.

Eagles starting pitcher Alex Mach (3-1) suffered the complete game loss, striking out eight and walking one while yielding four earned runs.

UW-Oshkosh had its nine-game winning streak come to an end during Sunday's opener. The Titans raced out to a 7-0 lead in the third inning, but UW-La Crosse stormed back to claim a 10-7 advantage following a six-run fourth frame and broke a 10-10 tie with three runs during the home half of the seventh.

Mac Born delivered the game-winning hit with a run-scoring single in the seventh inning. Olver added a two-run double for a 13-10 Eagles cushion. Olver concluded the nightcap with four runs batted in.

Both teams had 18 hits.

Surane and Nicholas Shiu had three hits apiece for UW-Oshkosh while Olver, Williams and Jonathan Wizner produced three each for UW-La Crosse. Shiu hit a three-run homer – his first this year – to give the Titans a 3-0 lead.

Surane later hit an RBI double and a two-run single as the Titans built their 7-0 lead. UW-Oshkosh knotted the score at 10 on Matt Scherrman's two-run single in the top of the seventh frame.

Scherrman, Eric Modaff, Ethan Schreier and Zach Taylor each chipped in two hits for the Titans. Shiu, Scherrman and Surane all contributed three runs batted in.

Eagles relief pitcher Caleb Matl tossed three scoreless innings to pick up the win. Matl (3-3) held the Titans to three hits and a walk with four strikeouts across the final three frames.

UW-Oshkosh relief pitcher Matt Sorrells (1-1) was charged with the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks in two innings.

The Titans and Eagles conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader Monday (May 2) in La Crosse.
