Six-Run Eighth Inning Secures Titans' Win Over Kohawks

Connor Brinkman pitched seven strong innings in his collegiate starting debut as the UW-Oshkosh baseball team broke open a close game late en route to a 9-1 victory over Coe College (Iowa) on Sunday (March 6) in Decatur, Ill.

UW-Oshkosh (2-4) never trailed but was clinging to a 2-1 lead after seven innings before exploding for six runs on just two hits during the eighth frame and tacking on another insurance run in the ninth.

The Titans staked Brinkman to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Mason Schultz hit a leadoff double and scored on a Matt Scherrman one-out single. Zach Taylor later added a run-scoring groundout that plated Jake Surane with what proved to be the winning run.

Brinkman (1-0) pitched the first seven innings for the Titans, allowing one run on four hits and a pair of walks with two strikeouts. Coe College had four baserunners across the first three innings, but Brinkman kept the Kohawks scoreless by going on to retire the side in order during the fourth and fifth frames, and pitching around a two-out double in the sixth.

Coe College (1-2) scratched across its lone run of the day on a squeeze bunt during the home half of the seventh inning.

However, the Titans sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the eighth frame that featured three hit-by-pitches and two walks against a trio of Coe College hurlers. Eli Davila delivered a two-run single that scored Eric Modaff and Mason Kirchberg for a 6-1 lead. Kirchberg provided the first of two UW-Oshkosh hits in the inning before Modaff was hit by a pitch.

Modaff later tripled to bring home Taylor with the final run of the game during the top of the ninth inning.

UW-Oshkosh outhit Coe College, 9-5, a day after the Kohawks defeated the Titans by a 5-2 score in Decatur. All nine UW-Oshkosh starters collected one hit. Modaff and Kirchberg both drove in two runs. Surane stole a pair of bases.

LJ Waco pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Brinkman. Waco gave up one hit and struck out three batters.

TJ Deardorff went 2-for-3 to lead Coe College.

Coe College starting pitcher Alex Timp (0-1) suffered the loss, yielding two runs on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts in three innings.

UW-Oshkosh plays a three-game series at Transylvania University next Saturday and Sunday (March 12-13) in Richmond, Ky. The Titans and Transylvania University will play a doubleheader Saturday to open the series.
