Blue Devils Eliminate Titans From WIAC Postseason

UW-Stout made the most of its three hits and defeated UW-Oshkosh, 2-0, in a first round elimination contest at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship (presented by Culver's) on Wednesday (May 19) in Menomonie.

Fourth-seeded UW-Stout (22-17) scored single runs during the sixth and seventh innings to register its second WIAC Championship victory and first since 2007 as Blue Devils starting pitcher James Palmer and reliever Jace Baumann combined to shut out the Titans.

Fifth-seeded UW-Oshkosh (20-19) stranded 10 baserunners, including seven in scoring position, after outhitting the Blue Devils, 8-3, drawing four walks and getting hit by two pitches.

UW-Stout advances to the four-team, double-elimination portion of the league tournament that begins Friday (May 21) in Whitewater, where the Blue Devils will face top-seeded UW-Stevens Point (30-9). Friday's first WIAC Championship game features second-seeded UW-Whitewater (34-5) hosting third-seeded UW-La Crosse (30-11). UW-La Crosse won its first round elimination home game, 14-13 in 10 innings, over sixth-seeded UW-Platteville (15-26) on Wednesday.

Palmer and UW-Oshkosh starting pitcher Jarrett Scheelk were locked in a scoreless duel until the Blue Devils plated a run on a sacrifice fly from Dan Deis in the bottom of the sixth inning. UW-Stout then added another run during the seventh frame on a Drew Ries single.

UW-Oshkosh had runners at second and third bases in the first inning before leaving two more aboard during the second frame, and the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh.

Palmer (7-3) earned the win, scattering seven hits, four walks and a pair of hit batters with eight strikeouts across the first 6.2 innings.

Baumann then picked up his first save of the year after tossing the final 2.1 innings, yielding just one hit and striking out one.

Scheelk, Hunter Staniske and Jake Surane each accounted for two of UW-Oshkosh's eight hits. Scheelk and Surane both hit doubles, while Staniske walked once and had a stolen base.

Scheelk (5-2) suffered the complete game loss despite holding the Blue Devils to one earned run on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

UW-Oshkosh finished the season with 47 home runs – the program's most since 2004.
