Titans Defeated By Third-Ranked Warhawks In 13 Innings

The UW-Oshkosh baseball team tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth frame, but nationally ranked UW-Whitewater outlasted the Titans, 7-6 in 13 innings, during the nonconference regular season finale Sunday (May 16) at Tiedemann Field.

UW-Oshkosh (20-18) cut its deficit to 6-4 with a three-run home half of the seventh inning before tying the score during the next frame on a Connor Giusti sacrifice fly and a Kameron Dransfeldt bunt single that plated Jarrett Scheelk from third base with one out.

UW-Whitewater (34-5), ranked third in the NCAA Division III by D3baseball.com, did not get a runner past second base between the eighth and 12th innings but pulled out the victory during the 13th frame as Donovan Brandl reached on a fielder's choice for the second out, stole second base and scored on Ryan Norton's flair single to shallow right field.

Dransfeldt singled to lead off the home half of the 13th inning for UW-Oshkosh. However, a flyout and a double play ended the longest Titan game since a 13-inning setback against Webster University (Mo.) on Feb. 29, 2016.

Giusti and Jake Surane both had three of the Titans' 11 hits and a pair of runs batted in. Surane, who produced his third straight multiple-hit performance, is 12-for-23 at the plate over the past five games.

Matt Korman went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to pace the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season co-champion Warhawks. Korman's two-run double extended the UW-Whitewater lead to 3-0 in the first inning.

Ben Muscatello (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the Warhawks after pitching the final three innings in scoreless fashion. Muscatello allowed just one hit while striking out one.

UW-Oshkosh's LJ Waco (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run on one hit and a walk during the 13th inning. Titan reliever Trevor Niedzwiecki struck out seven Warhawks while allowing just two hits during five scoreless innings pitched.

Both teams used five pitchers in the longest game involving a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team this season, including Will Michalski who went six innings as the starter for the Titans and Connor Moroder who went five innings as the starter for the Warhawks.

UW-Oshkosh continues its season Wednesday (May 19) with a WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's) first round matchup at UW-Stout. The Titans will be the fifth seed at the WIAC Championship while UW-Stout is the fourth. The conference tournament moves to UW-Whitewater after the first round for a four-team, double-elimination event on May 21-23.
