Warhawks Hold Off Titans' Late-Inning Comebacks

The UW-Oshkosh baseball team's late-inning comeback attempts fell short in both games as nationally ranked UW-Whitewater swept a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday (April 6) at Tiedemann Field.

UW-Whitewater (11-2, 5-1 WIAC), ranked 16th in the NCAA Division III by D3baseball.com, won by scores of 6-5 in 11 innings during the opener and 9-5 in the second contest to reclaim the top spot in the league standings.

UW-Oshkosh (6-6, 4-2 WIAC), which had its four-game winning streak snapped, knotted the opener at 5 with three runs in the eighth inning and another run during the ninth frame. The Titans then cut their deficit to 6-5 in the second game after three-run bottom of the eighth inning, but the Warhawks responded with three runs of their own in the top of the ninth frame.

Tuesday's doubleheader marked the fourth of eight games between the Titans and Warhawks this season. UW-Whitewater also swept a pair of nonconference games against UW-Oshkosh on March 24 in Whitewater. The teams conclude their four-game conference series with a pair of contests Friday (April 9) and play another nonconference doubleheader Saturday (April 10) in Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh outhit UW-Whitewater, 22-20, on the day in a matchup of the top two scoring teams in the conference as the Titans entered Tuesday averaging 9.3 runs per game and the Warhawks 9.2.

Hunter Staniske went a combined 5-for-9 at the plate with a double, home run and three runs batted in to pace the Titans, extending his hitting streak to 15 games.

UW-Oshkosh's Eric Modaff upped his hitting streak to 12 games and lifted his team-leading fourth homer run of the season during the opener while Matt Scherrman ended the day 4-for-10 with four RBIs.

In the first game of the day, UW-Oshkosh took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on Modaff's solo homer. However, UW-Whitewater responded with five unanswered runs to claim a 5-1 advantage in the seventh frame.

The Titans' three-run eighth inning featured RBI doubles from Staniske and Scherrman ahead of a Zach Taylor single that scored Scherrman and pulled the Titans within. After the Titans tied the score at 5 on Jarrett Scheelk's run-scoring single that plated Modaff in the bottom of the ninth inning, UW-Oshkosh left the bases loaded during the 10th frame.

Nick Santoro then produced a run-scoring single for UW-Whitewater in the top of the 11th inning, and Warhawks relief pitcher Connor Moroder preserved the win by retiring the Titans in order during the home half of the 11th frame.

Moroder (2-0) picked up the win, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing one run on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

UW-Whitewater starting pitcher Westin Muir held the Titans to one run on four hits and a pair of walks with nine strikeouts across the first six innings.

Titans relief pitcher Alex Larson (0-1) suffered the loss despite limiting the Warhawks to one run on three hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out three.

Jacob DeMeyer went 3-for-5 and scored three times to pace UW-Whitewater, which also received two hits each from Santoro, Donovan Brandl, Ryan Norton and Sam Vomhof.

Scheelk, Scherrman and Staniske all had two of UW-Oshkosh's 11 hits.

During the second contest, UW-Whitewater never trailed after Santoro hit a three-run inside-the-park home run in the first inning. Staniske hit his second home run of the season – a two-run shot to left field – to cut the Titan deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the first frame, but DeMeyer launched a two-run homer in the eighth inning that provided the Warhawks a 6-2 cushion.

Scherrman then hit a three-run homer – his third in the past four games – to pull the Titans within 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Warhawks tacked on three insurance runs in the ninth frame to put the game away.

DeMeyer ended the nightcap 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and two RBIs for UW-Whitewater.

Warhawks starting pitcher Matt O'Sullivan improved his record to 4-0 on the year, yielding two runs on six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

Scheelk (2-1), the Titans starting pitcher, was charged with the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) despite allowing just three hits. He walked five and struck out six.

Staniske was 3-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBIs for the Titans while Scherrman went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Staniske's and Scherrman's home runs in the second contest increased UW-Oshkosh's WIAC-leading total to 16 this season.
