Titans Swept By Pointers

UW-Stevens Point hit four home runs on the way to sweeping UW-Oshkosh in a nonconference baseball doubleheader Monday (March 29) in Stevens Point.

The Pointers won the first game of the day, 11-1 in seven innings, and the second contest, 7-2. Both games were scoreless after four innings.

UW-Stevens Point (4-2) outhit UW-Oshkosh, 21-13, during the two contests. Ten of the Pointers' hits went for extra bases, including six doubles.

UW-Oshkosh's Eric Modaff finished the doubleheader a combined 4-for-7 at the plate with a double, home run, walk and stolen base.

During the opener, UW-Stevens Point scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, extended its lead to 9-1 with a six-run sixth frame and invoked the 10-run rule with two more runs in the seventh.

The Pointers began the scoring with a Bradley Comer solo home run during the fifth inning. Aaron Simmons later added a pair of two-run homers before the game ended on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Lillge.

UW-Oshkosh (2-4) scored its lone run on a Matt Scherrman sacrifice fly that plated Hunter Staniske during the top of the sixth inning.

Comer and Simmons went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in apiece for the Pointers.

Modaff and Staniske both doubled and had two of UW-Oshkosh's six hits. Modaff also walked and stole a base.

UW-Stevens Point relief pitcher Zack Haupt (1-1) picked up the win, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Pointers starting pitcher Casey Pickering held the Titans scoreless over the first three innings. Austin Syvertson then retired all five UW-Oshkosh batters he faced during the final 1.2 frames in relief of Haupt.

UW-Oshkosh starting pitcher Will Michalski (1-1) suffered the loss after yielding three runs (two earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings. He walked four batters and struck out three.

In the nightcap, UW-Oshkosh took its first lead of the day on a Jarrett Scheelk sacrifice fly that scored Jake Andersen in the fifth inning, but the Pointers answered with five runs of their own during the home half of the fifth frame.

The Titans cut their deficit to 5-2 following Modaff's second home run of the year in the seventh inning. However, UW-Stevens Point responded immediately once again with a two-run homer by Payton Nelson during the bottom of the seventh frame.

Lillge was 4-for-4 for the Pointers, who also received two hits each from Comer, Nelson and Quin Henwood. Nelson and Tommy Duddleston both drove in three runs.

Modaff went 2-for-5 to pace the Titans.

Pointers starting pitcher Caleb Krommenakker (1-0) earned the win after holding UW-Oshkosh to one run on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings.

Scherrman (0-1), the UW-Oshkosh starting pitcher, was charged with the loss, ceding five runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out four without issuing a walk.
