Titans Lending A Hand This Holiday Season

Often times, the holiday season serves as a time of giving and charity. In the community, people volunteer and give back to support those in need. It’s a wonderful time of year for celebrating and passing happiness onto others. Within the next month, UW-Oshkosh student-athletes will be joining in the efforts. Titan teams and their coaches will be volunteering at various locations and raising awareness at special events.

To kick things off, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee began a department-wide food drive as a friendly competition between the UW-Oshkosh sports teams. From Nov. 1-20, teams collected as many non-perishable items as possible to donate to the Oshkosh Area Food Pantry.

On Nov. 1, the Titan football team volunteered for a mobile food pantry with Feeding America. Feeding America did not plan to return to Oshkosh until spring; however, the team donated $1,000 to encourage another visit. Now on Dec. 21, Feeding America, as well as Molina Health Care and Walgreens, will be at the Oshkosh St. Vincent de Paul located on Jackson Street. Molina Health Care will be collecting winter items, such as hats and gloves. Walgreens will provide free flu shots, and Feeding America will distribute food to community members. The Titan football team will once again be participating in this special event from 10 a.m - 1 p.m. All UW-Oshkosh teams and their coaches have been invited to help out.

The volunteering doesn’t stop there:

• Men’s soccer will be bell-ringing at six different locations during the month of December for the Salvation Army.

• Women’s soccer is raising money for its international trip by selling Danny Panama Coffee beans. For freshly ground coffee beans, contact Coach Coppernoll at copperne@uwosh.edu.

• Men’s basketball is visiting the Respite House, which is a part of the Cerebral Palsy Organization of Mideast Wisconsin.

• On Dec. 5, join the men’s basketball team for “Hats for Warmth,” a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh, sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings. At halftime, there will be a collection of hats, mittens, books, boots and more. See a full list on the athletics website, www.uwoshkoshtitans.com.

• Women’s basketball is hosting a free clinic for the Special Olympics of the Fox Valley on Nov. 28.

• Swimming & diving is raising awareness for the American Cancer Society at its Dec. 7 home meet.
