Hall Of Fame Inductee: Whitney (Tyriver) Stenbroten

This is the second in a 14-part series that introduces the 14 members of the 2024 UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Class. Their inductions will take place Friday, August 2 (3:30 p.m.) at the Culver Family Welcome Center (625 Pearl Avenue) on the UW-Oshkosh campus. UW-Oshkosh then celebrates 50 years of inductions into its Athletics Hall of Fame during a special event held Saturday, August 3 (3:30 p.m.) at the Oshkosh Convention Center (2 North Main Street). Hall of fame members in attendance will be recognized and receive a variety of commemorative items. The keynote speaker is Iowa State University Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard, a 1999 UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame inductee. Tickets ($45 each, aged five and older) for this event are open to the public and will be on sale through July 1. Whitney (Tyriver) Stenbroten achieved an abundance of success while participating in each of UW-Oshkosh's 105 women's basketball games from 2005-08 and 131 softball contests from 2005-07.

In basketball, Stenbroten was a two-time All-WIAC First Team selection who concluded her career with 1,047 points, 489 rebounds, 215 assists, 157 steals and 82-percent (255-311) shooting from the free throw line. Stenbroten, who started 87 games at guard for the Titans, currently ranks eighth in WIAC history in career free throw percentage and 22nd in UW-Oshkosh history in career scoring.

On the softball field, Stenbroten started every game for UW-Oshkosh. The three-time All-WIAC First Team shortstop compiled a career .372 batting average with 18 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 78 runs scored and 55 runs batted in.

Stenbroten is a 2004 graduate of Oshkosh West High School, where she played basketball for 1996 UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame inductee Terri Schumacher and softball for 2023 UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame inductee David Christman. Schumacher was named UW-Oshkosh's head women's basketball coach in 2006 and coached Stenbroten during her final three seasons as a Titan.

Stenbroten helped UW-Oshkosh to a 22-6 basketball record in 2005 by averaging 3.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. The following season she averaged 6.8 points and 5.5 rebounds as the Titans compiled a 19-8 record and shared the WIAC championship with UW-Stout.

In 2007, Stenbroten received NCAA Division III All-Region Third Team and All-WIAC First Team accolades after averaging 15.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per contest. Stenbroten converted 86.7 percent (98-113) of her free throws and averaged 35.54 minutes played to lead the WIAC in both categories.

Stenbroten was named to the Division III All-Region First Team, All-WIAC First Team and WIAC All-Defensive Team in 2008. She averaged 14.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while leading the WIAC with an average of 32.27 minutes played.

Stenbroten was a double-figure scorer in 42 of her last 50 basketball games played and tallied a career-high 27 points with 10 rebounds during the Titans' 70-48 victory over UW-Superior on December 2, 2006.

In softball, Stenbroten earned NCAA Division III All-Region Third Team and All-WIAC First Team mentions in 2005 after hitting .376 with one home run and 25 runs scored.

The following year Stenbroten attained Division III All-Region Second Team and All-WIAC First Team status. She was named the WIAC's Co-Position Player of the Year after hitting .412 with four home runs, eight doubles, 28 runs scored and 21 runs batted in. Stenbroten's 61 hits that season paced the WIAC.

Stenbroten played her final softball season in 2007 and helped the Titans to a 36-11 record and the WIAC championship. She collected an All-WIAC First Team award after hitting .331 with three home runs, 25 runs scored and 28 runs batted in.

Stenbroten recorded 47 multiple-hit games during her softball career, including a four-hit performance that featured two home runs, one double and five runs batted in during UW-Oshkosh's 6-1 victory over UW-Platteville in the WIAC Tournament on May 6, 2006.

Stenbroten, a four-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll, received her bachelor's and master's degrees from UW-Oshkosh in 2009 and 2022, respectively.

Stenbroten has taught preschool, kindergarten and first grade and coached numerous sports at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in Oshkosh since 2010. The 2020 winner of the UW-Oshkosh College of Education and Human Services Elementary Teacher Excellence Award is currently a four-year-old kindergarten teacher for Oshkosh Early Learning at Jacob Shapiro Elementary School.

Stenbroten and husband Craig, the defensive coordinator for the UW-Oshkosh football team, live in Oshkosh.

The UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1974 to enhance school tradition and give lasting recognition to those student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and friends of the university who distinguished themself at an exemplary level.

Each hall of fame member represents greatness, with their accomplishments built on campus, after graduation or through meritorious efforts that benefit the UW-Oshkosh athletics program.

The first UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held April 28, 1974, at The Pioneer Inn & Marina. The five inductees were Edward Boguski, Edward Hall, Burton Karges, Robert Kolf and Robert Williams.

Four venues have hosted the UW-Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony – The Pioneer Inn & Marina (1974-2001), Hilton Garden Inn Oshkosh (2002), UW-Oshkosh's Reeve Memorial Union (2003-13) and UW-Oshkosh's Culver Family Welcome Center (2014-19, 2021-Present).
