Titans Win Last Three Sets To Reel In Muskies

Samantha Jaeke had a match-high 17 kills to lead the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Lakeland University on Wednesday (Oct. 16).

UW-Oshkosh (18-6), which surpassed its win total from last season, defeated Lakeland University (11-12) in set scores of 17-25, 25-20, 25-14, 28-26. The Titans improved to 24-1 in the series since 1989 after avenging last year's 3-1 loss to Lakeland University.

Jaeke's 17 kills are two shy of her career high established earlier this season. Jaeke has produced double-digit kill totals 14 times on the year.

Eight different Titans contributed kills Wednesday, including Kendall Enyart with eight, Carissa Sundholm with seven and Shelby Coron with six. Kate Nottoli had four kills along with a match-best and career-high five blocks for the Titans.

UW-Oshkosh's Emma Kiekhofer dished out 28 assists and recorded three of the team's eight service aces. Rebecca Doughty added 17 assists and three service aces for the Titans.

Rachel Gardner led all players with 22 digs for UW-Oshkosh, which also received 10 digs from Sundholm and four blocks from Jaeke.

UW-Oshkosh finished the match with advantages of 49-41 in kills, .185 to .148 in hitting percentage, 65-51 in digs and 8-7 in blocks. Both teams had eight service aces.

Lakeland University outhit the Titans, .091 to -.079, during the first set in which UW-Oshkosh committed 11 attack errors. The Muskies scored seven unanswered points for a 13-7 lead they would not relinquish. Lakeland University upped its cushion to 23-16 on a kill by Abby Baumgartner and claimed the set on a block from Erin Iwanski.

The Muskies led for a majority of the second set after racing out to a 5-1 advantage. UW-Oshkosh pulled even at 17 following a Kiekhofer service ace. The Titans claimed their first lead of the set at 20-19 on a Jaeke kill as UW-Oshkosh closed out the frame with an 11-3 run that began on a termination by Sundholm. UW-Oshkosh tallied five points in a row for a 23-19 lead after another Jaeke termination. The Titans tied the match three points later on a Doughty service ace.

After Lakeland University scored the first four points of the third set, UW-Oshkosh with an 8-1 run that featured kills from Jaeke, Nottoli and Rachel Aasby ahead of a double-block by Coron and Jaeke for an 8-5 lead. Clinging to an 8-7 edge, UW-Oshkosh seized control of the third set with seven of the next nine points, including two on service aces from Doughty and Morgan Dunn. The Titans later extended their lead to 24-12 following a combination block from Jaeke and Nottoli before UW-Oshkosh converted its third set-point on a Jaeke termination.

The fourth set included 17 ties and nine lead changes as UW-Oshkosh came back from a 16-12 deficit to knot the frame for the eighth time at 17 following a kill by Doughty. The Titans then fended off three set-points after kills by Jaeke, Taylor Allen and Enyart to tie the score at 26. A Muskies attack error provided their first match-point at 27-26. Coron then ended the contest with a kill – the Titans' 17th of the frame – on the ensuing point.

Baumgartner paced Lakeland University with 11 kills on .075 hitting and 16 digs while Neenah Primas had a match-high 32 assists. Iwanski chipped in seven kills and six blocks for the Muskies.

UW-Oshkosh hosts UW-Stout on Friday (Oct. 18) in Kolf Sports Center.
