Warhawks Defeat Titans In Three Sets

UW-Whitewater's Emma Aske and Rachel Butterfield led all players with nine kills apiece as the nationally ranked Warhawks defeated the UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team, 3-0, on Wednesday (Sept. 26) in Whitewater.

UW-Whitewater (11-2, 2-0 WIAC), ranked 25th in the NCAA Division III by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, won in set scores of 25-28, 25-23, 25-20. The Warhawks improved to 299-37 at home since 2000.

Ashton Doll and Erin McNeil both chipped in seven kills for the Warhawks, who also received a match-high 12 digs from Brittany Robinson and six blocks from Doll. KellyAnn Sotiros had 16 assists and 10 digs while co-directing the UW-Whitewater offense with Paige Manssen, who added 12 assists.

Taylor Allen and Samantha Jaeke had six kills apiece to lead UW-Oshkosh while Tina Elstner and Carly Lemke both contributed five terminations. Allen also paced the Titans with four blocks.

Elstner and Rachel Gardner tied for the team lead with 11 digs. Emma Kiekhofer had 13 assists and Rebecca Doughty 12 while sharing setting duties for the Titans. Doughty recorded 10 digs to notch her second double-double of the year and the fifth of her career.

UW-Whitewater held advantages in kills (38-30), hitting percentage (.283 to .049), assists (36-29) and blocks (11-5.5). UW-Oshkosh owned an 8-5 edge in service aces, and both teams registered 44 digs. The Warhawks committed just 10 attack errors.

UW-Oshkosh got out to a 7-6 lead in the first set on a double-block from Allen and Jaeke, but the Warhawks reclaimed an 8-7 advantage they would not relinquish following a McNeil kill. The Titans cut their deficit to 21-15 after two kills by Jaeke and a UW-Whitewater error, but the Warhawks tallied four of the final seven points to cap the frame.

Tied at 11 in the second set, UW-Whitewater scored six consecutive points during a spurt that featured two kills apiece from Aske and Butterfield. The Titans responded with six straight points of their own to take a 19-18 lead behind back-to-back kills by Jaeke and Renee Rush. Tied again at 21, UW-Whitewater rattled off three points in a row. UW-Oshkosh erased a pair of set-points on kills from Elstner and Rush, but Doll concluded the set with a kill on the ensuing point.

UW-Whitewater raced out to an 8-3 lead and never trailed in the third set. The Titans pulled within 19-17 after two kills in a row by Lemke before the Warhawks rebounded to earn match-point at 24-18. Kills by Jaeke and Kendall Enyart extended the match for the Titans, but a McNeil termination ended the contest.

UW-Oshkosh returns home to host 17th-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Friday (Sept. 28) in Kolf Sports Center.
