Titans Host Pioneers In WIAC Postseason Opener

Titans Host Pioneers In WIAC Postseason Opener

UW-Oshkosh commences play in the 2014 WIAC Women's Volleyball Championship by hosting UW-Platteville at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 4) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Oshkosh (29-6) earned the third seed for the six-team tournament by finishing third in the WIAC's regular-season standings with a 5-3 record. The Titans defeated UW-Eau Claire, 3-2, on Saturday (Nov. 1) to secure their position in the tournament. Had UW-Eau Claire prevailed, UW-Oshkosh would have lost a five-team tiebreaker for the last four entries into the WIAC Championship.

UW-Platteville (17-16), which recorded a 3-2 win over UW-Oshkosh on Oct. 22, is the tournament's sixth seed. The Pioneers went 4-4 during the WIAC's regular season to share fourth place with UW-River Falls and UW-Stout.

UW-Oshkosh has won three straight matches and 10 of its last 13. The Titans are 13-3 at home this season and need one victory to reach 30 wins for the sixth time in 10 seasons.

UW-Platteville had its two-match winning streak snapped with Saturday's 3-0 loss to UW-Stevens Point. The Pioneers have won 10 of their last 12 contests, with their other defeat being a 3-1 setback to Millikin University (Ill.) on Oct. 25.

The winner of Tuesday's match between UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville advances to meet second-seed and WIAC regular-season co-champion UW-Whitewater (25-7) at 5 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 7) in Stevens Point.

Another first-round contest scheduled for Tuesday has fifth-seed UW-Stout (20-9) visiting fourth-seed UW-River Falls (12-18). The winner of that contest will challenge top-seed and WIAC regular-season co-champion UW-Stevens Point (27-4) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Stevens Point.

Matches for first and third places will be held Saturday (Nov. 8) in Stevens Point.

UW-Stevens Point won last year's WIAC Championship, while UW-Eau Claire captured the title in 2012, UW-Whitewater in 2011 and UW-Platteville in 2010.

The winner of the WIAC Championship receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
