Titans Open Season With Sweep Of Oregon Opponents

The UW-Oshkosh women's volleyball team opened the 2014 season with four-set wins over a pair of Northwest Conference opponents on Friday (Aug. 29) at the Bulldog Classic in Seguin, Texas. The Titans defeated Willamette University (Ore.), 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, and Lewis & Clark College (Ore.) 25-19, 17-25, 25-18, 25-19.

Brooke Brinkman led UW-Oshkosh with 30 total kills and a combined .442 hitting percentage on the day. Brinkman added three service aces in the two wins. Lexi Thiel ran the offense and totaled 50 assists in the two matches. Thiel added eight kills in 18 errorless attempts for a .444 hitting percentage and 17 total digs. Mandy Trautmann led UW-Oshkosh in digs both matches and averaged 5.5 digs per set for the day.

During UW-Oshkosh's victory over Willamette University, Brinkman carried the offense with a career-high 19 kills, including eight in the second set. She had three attack errors on 28 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage.

Katelyn Malcheski and Nerissa Vogt reached double-digit kills with 13 and 10, respectively. Trautmann had 32 of the Titans' 76 digs. Thiel had 42 assists, nine digs, and five kills on 12 errorless attempts in her first career start.

UW-Oshkosh won the kills column 60-41 and out-hit Willamette University, .230 to .134. The Titans had 17 kills in Set 2 and hit .344 in Set 1 and .364 in Set 3. The Titans added nine service aces, including a team-high three from Jessica Fischer. UW-Oshkosh closed out Set 4 and the match by scoring seven consecutive points.

Against Lewis & Clark College, Brinkman and Fischer paced the Titans with 11 kills apiece. Malcheski chipped in with eight kills. Thiel had a career-high 37 assists and added eight digs and three kills on six errorless attempts for a .500 hitting percentage. Trautmann led the UW-Oshkosh defense with 12 digs.

UW-Oshkosh hit .153 for the match, totaling 46 kills in 131 attempts. The Titans had a match-high 14 kills in Set 3. Lewis & Clark College hit .150, compiling 42 kills in 120 attempts. The Pioneers recorded a match-best 13 kills in Set 2.

UW-Oshkosh remains in Seguin to play tournament host Texas Lutheran University and Concordia University Texas on Saturday (Aug. 30).
