Titans Begin WIAC Tournament At UW-River Falls

UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls battle for the second time in four days when the two women's volleyball teams meet in an opening-round match of the WIAC Tournament on Tuesday (Oct. 30) in River Falls.

UW-Oshkosh, a four-time WIAC Tournament champion (1990, 1991, 1994, 2008), enters the 7 p.m. contest at the Karges Center with a 19-17 record. The Titans received the fifth seed for this year's tournament after going 3-5 in league play.

UW-Oshkosh has won 16 of its 19 matches this season by 3-0 scores. Among them are sweeps over UW-La Crosse on Oct. 17 and UW-Stout on Oct. 26.

UW-River Falls, which captured the WIAC Tournament crown in 1996, brings a 22-11 record into its match with UW-Oshkosh. The fourth-seeded Falcons went 5-3 in conference action.

UW-River Falls owns a 3-1 record in its last four matches, with the only blemish being a 3-0 loss to UW-Whitewater on Oct. 26. The Falcons have swept 11 of their opponents.

UW-River Falls won its last two meetings with UW-Oshkosh. Last Saturday (Oct. 27) in Kolf Sports Center, the Falcons defeated the Titans by a 3-1 score.

Another first-round contest scheduled for Tuesday has sixth-seeded UW-Stout (15-13) visiting third-seeded UW-Eau Claire (22-11).

The winner of Tuesday's match between UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls will play regular-season champion and top-seeded UW-Stevens Point on Friday (Nov. 2) in Stevens Point. Friday's other semifinal round contest in Stevens Point has second-seeded and 14-time tournament champion UW-Whitewater challenging the winner between UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout.

Matches for first and third places will be held Saturday (Nov. 3) in Stevens Point. The winner of the WIAC Tournament receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
