Titans Overcome Falcons In WIAC Tournament

Facing elimination in both the fourth and fifth sets, UW-Oshkosh fought for a 3-2 victory over UW-River Falls in a first-round contest of the WIAC Women's Volleyball Tournament held Tuesday (Oct. 30) in River Falls.

UW-Oshkosh, which suffered a 3-1 loss to UW-River Falls in the regular-season finale on Saturday (Oct. 27), defeated the Falcons this time around in set scores of 20-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20 and 15-12.

With the win, UW-Oshkosh (20-17) advances to play regular-season champion UW-Stevens Point (28-6) on Friday (Nov. 2) in Stevens Point. The Pointers compete in the semifinals after receiving a first-round bye.

In the first set, UW-Oshkosh scored four straight points to take a 13-12 lead. UW-River Falls then counted nine of the next 12 points to take control at 21-16.

The Titans held a 16-11 lead in the second set, but UW-River Falls came back to tie it at 20. UW-Oshkosh then finished the set by taking three of the last four points.

UW-River Falls (22-12) bolted to a 10-4 advantage in the third set before UW-Oshkosh rallied to tie the score at 22. After another tie at 23, the Falcons ended the set with two straight points.

The fourth set was even at 13 before the Titans pulled away with a 6-1 scoring run.

UW-Oshkosh scored seven straight points early in the final set to take a 7-1 lead. The Falcons nearly equaled that by marking six unanswered points to tie the score. Trailing 9-8, UW-Oshkosh finished strong by earning seven of the last 10 points.

Larissa Krumplitsch (Sr. • Appleton) was a force at the net, posting 15 kills and five blocks. Katelyn Malcheski (Fr. • Little Suamico) added kills for the Titans, who also used 33 assists by Morgan Liebetrau (Sr. • West Bend). Robyn Eggert (Jr. • Woodridge, Ill.) and Mandy Trautmann (Fr. • Seymour) recorded 17 digs apiece.

UW-River Falls had five players with double-digit kills, including Jean Theis who compiled 13 and Danielle Gibbemeyer who tallied 12. Theis also blocked seven shots. Mackenzie Suda finished with 53 assists, while Courtney Preiner made 14 digs.
