Titans Place Second At NCAA Indoor Championship

A valiant effort came six points short as two-time defending champion UW-Oshkosh finished second at the NCAA Division III Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (March 13-14) in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Once again, the hunt for the team title was in question going into the meet's final event, the 1,600-meter relay.

UW-Oshkosh trailed UW-La Crosse by two points (45-43) heading into the relay and appeared in excellent shape after Caitlyn McCormick, Stephanie Jahn, Becklyn Hunter and Kylee Verhasselt posted a leading time of 3:50.19 before the event's third and final heat.

However, UW-La Crosse won the final heat and the event with a time of 3:49.89 to secure its lead and capture the school's first NCAA Division III indoor title with 55 points. Last year, the roles were reversed as the Titans won the team title with their effort in the 1,600-meter relay.

McCormick, Jahn, Hunter and Verhasselt went on to finish third in the 1,600-meter relay with their season-best time. It was the second indoor All-America award in the event for Jahn, McCormick and Verhasselt and the first for Hunter.

UW-Oshkosh, which owns a NCAA Division III-leading nine indoor titles, placed second at this year's meet with 49 points. Illinois Wesleyan University finished third with 39 points and both Massachusetts Institute of Technology and UW-Eau Claire fourth with 34.

UW-Whitewater finished sixth among the 67 teams that scored with 27 points, while Lehman College (N.Y.) placed seventh with 26, Buffalo State University (N.Y.) eighth with 25, Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) ninth with 23 and Middlebury College (Vt.) 10th with 22.

The Titans' Melanie Brickner won the 20-pound weight throw with a season-best distance of 64-1 3/4. Her first indoor national title followed All-America finishes of third in both 2013 and 2014.

Brickner contributed a few more team points with her sixth-place throw of 45-10 in the shot put. The performance marked Brickner's first indoor All-America award in the event. Cherae Reeves of Concordia-Moorhead College (Minn.) claimed this year's shot put title with a measurement of 48-3 1/4.

Jecel (Gerner) Klotz also had a big meet for the Titans. She finished third in both the 20-pound weight throw and shot put with distances of 58-2 (season best) and 46-9, respectively. Klotz was the defending shot put champion. She now has three indoor All-America awards in both the 20-pound weight throw and shot put.

In addition to her performance in the 1,600-meter relay, Verhasselt also finished second in the 800-meter run and anchored the Titans' distance medley relay team that placed fifth.

Verhasselt was the defending champion in the 800-meter run and finished this year's race with a time of 2:10.42. It was the second indoor All-America plaque for Verhasselt in the event. Cynthia Adams of Lebanon Valley College (Pa.) won this year's 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.81.

Verhasselt picked up her third All-America award of the weekend by helping the Titans distance medley relay team register a season-best time of 11:51.83. Other members of the squad were Jahn, Sonny Jenkins and Isabella Tremonti. It was the third indoor All-America citation in the distance medley relay for Jahn and Verhasselt, the second for Jenkins and the first for Tremonti. The University of St. Thomas (Minn.) won this year's relay with a time of 11:45.26 to end UW-Oshkosh's two-year reign as champion.

Taylor Sherry earned her first indoor All-America medals by finishing fifth in the pentathlon with 3,462 points and seventh in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.90 seconds. Allie Boudreau of Illinois Wesleyan University took first place in the pentathlon with 3,631 points while Adriana Wright of Lehman College won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.45 seconds.

Emily Reichenberger, Megan Geldernick, Kasey Ederer and Samantha Blue also represented UW-Oshkosh at this year's championship. Reichenberger finished 10th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.62 seconds, Geldernick 13th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.00 seconds, Ederer 15th in the high jump with a height of 5-3 and Blue 16th in the long jump with a leap of 16-10.
