Titans Resume Schedule With Mixed Results

In its first action since finishing fourth at the WIAC Championship last October, the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team returned to the court and posted a 1-1 record in matches against Coe (Iowa) and Augustana (Ill.) colleges on Saturday (March 7) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-Oshkosh (8-4) defeated Coe College (8-7), 5-4, in the opener before losing a 9-0 decision to Augustana College (10-0) in the nightcap.

During UW-Oshkosh's victory over Coe College, Samantha Koppa earned the Titans' fifth and deciding team point with her 6-1, 6-1 victory over Emma Lassen in the second flight of the singles competition. Koppa's win gave UW-Oshkosh a 5-2 lead with only two individual contests remaining.

The Titans secured two team points in doubles play as Alyssa Leffler and Michelle Spicer defeated Lassen and Eliza Sundermann in the first flight while Evie Chitko and Lesley Kutnink ousted Sophia Craig and Christine Puleo in the third by 8-4 scores.

Coe College won the No. 2 doubles contest as Victoria Montoya and Ella White defeated Koppa and Taylor Johnson, 8-5.

Other individual winners for the Titans against the Kohawks were Kutnink in the fourth flight and Johnson in the fifth. Kutnink defeated Puleo, 6-2, 6-2, while Johnson outlasted Craig, 6-0, 4-6 (10-5).

Coe College received its individual wins from Sundermann in the first flight, White in the third and Michaela Pinto in the sixth. Sundermann defeated Leffler, 0-6, 6-3 (10-7), while White ousted Spicer, 6-3, 6-0. Pinto was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Chitko.

In UW-Oshkosh's nightcap, Augustana College dominated the Titans by winning all six singles contests in straight sets and 24 of the 30 games during the doubles competition.

The Vikings took control of the match with their wins from Zeana Badawi and Annie Timm in the first, Lauren Oda and Lily Schoeck in the second and Leraaen Abbott and Grace Rider in the third flight of doubles play.

Badawi and Timm defeated Leffler and Spicer, 8-1, while Oda and Schoeck ousted Johnson and Koppa, 8-5. Abbott and Rider were an 8-0 victor over Chitko and Kutnink.

In singles play, Augustana College acquired a 6-0, 6-0 win from Schoeck over Kutnink in the fourth flight, 6-0, 6-1 victory from Timm over Leffler in the first and a 6-1, 6-0 triumph from Morgan Bullen over Chitko in the sixth.

Other individual winners for the Vikings were Badawi in the second flight, Michaela Magee in the third and Oda in the fifth. Badawi defeated Koppa, 6-2, 6-0, while Magee ousted Spicer, 6-3, 6-0. Oda won by a 6-1, 6-2 result over Johnson.

UW-Oshkosh is off until it plays St. Norbert and Carthage colleges on March 29 at the Western Racquet Club in Ashwaubenon.
