Titans Place Seventh At UW-Whitewater Warhawk Invitational

Taylor Johnson and Lesley Kutnink finished fourth at No. 2 doubles while Alyssa Leffler placed sixth at No. 1 singles to lead the UW-Oshkosh women's tennis team at the UW-Whitewater Warhawk Invitational held Saturday (Aug. 31) in Whitewater.

Johnson and Kutnink combined for a 1-2 record, including a 6-1, 6-7 (5), 10-4 loss to Morgan Bullen and Kalli Majewski of Augustana College (Ill.) in their third-place match. Johnson and Kutnink opened with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sydney Rowley and Autumn See of Illinois Wesleyan University before losing a 6-1, 6-1 result to eventual champion Olivia Kraft and Sabrina Palavra of UW-Whitewater.

Leffler compiled a 1-2 individual record and lost her fifth-place match to UW-La Crosse's Maura Anderson by a 6-3, 6-4 tally. Leffler began play with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Augustana College's Annie Timm before defeating Carthage College's Giana Apostoli, 6-1, 0-6, 10-7.

The Titans had a trio of seventh-place finishers, including Evie Chitko at No. 2 and Angie Carini at No. 3 singles. Both players accumulated a 1-2 record, with Chitko defeating Illinois Wesleyan University's Caitly Smith, 6-4, 6-2, and Carini ousting Illinois Wesleyan University's Andrea Zulawski, 6-3, 7-6 (7), in their seventh-place contests.

UW-Oshkosh's No. 1 doubles tandem of Samantha Koppa and Michelle Spicer placed seventh with their 1-2 record. Their lone victory came in the seventh-place match, a 6-1, 5-7, 10-5, decision over Ashley Mohr and Becca Rochacz of Illinois Wesleyan University.

The Titans' No. 3 doubles team of Katie Hammerton and Courtney Salisbury finished eighth after going winless in three contests.

UW-Whitewater scored 48 points to win the eight-team tournament. The Warhawks were followed by second-place Grinnell College (Iowa) with 42 points and third-place UW-Eau Claire with 32.

Augustana College finished fourth in the team standings with 30 points while Carthage College placed fifth with 22, UW-La Crosse sixth with 21, UW-Oshkosh seventh with 15 and Illinois Wesleyan University eighth with 5.

UW-Oshkosh hosts Lawrence University on Tuesday (Sept. 3) in its home opener at the Kolf Sports Center Outdoor Courts.
