Titans Finish Fourth At WIAC Championship

UW-Oshkosh had the fourth-place performance in seven of the nine categories as it placed fourth in the team standings at the WIAC Women's Tennis Championship held Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 24-25) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.

UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater both scored 56 points to share the top team listing, while UW-Eau Claire placed third with 48 points and UW-Oshkosh fourth with 34. UW-Stevens Point took fifth place with 26 points, UW-River Falls sixth with 18 and UW-Stout seventh with 14.

UW-Whitewater earned three singles crowns and a pair of doubles titles at the WIAC Championship, while UW-La Crosse won two singles titles and one doubles event. UW-Eau Claire captured remaining singles title.

UW-Oshkosh's five individual fourth-place finishes belonged to Erica Van Riper in the first flight, Bailey Sagen in the second, Brianna Theobald in the third, Llora Waldman in the fourth and Paige Ganser in the sixth. All five players won their first match before losing the next two.

In doubles play, the Titans received fourth-place finishes from Sagen and Van Riper in the first flight and Theobald and Waldman in the second. Both tandems won their first contest before losing the next two.

Hannah Bostwick took fifth place for UW-Oshkosh at both No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles. Her partner in doubles play was Maggie Bolton.

The WIAC named UW-Whitewater's Megan Humphreys as its Player of the Year and the Warhawks' Frank Barnes as its Coach of the Year. UW-Eau Claire's Madeline Johnson received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.

Combined with points awarded from the regular-season dual meet standings, UW-Whitewater won its eighth straight overall WIAC title and 15th in school history.

The Warhawks totaled 20 points in the final overall standings, while UW-La Crosse finished second with 19 points, UW-Eau Claire third with 15, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 12, UW-Stevens Point fifth with nine, UW-River Falls sixth with six and UW-Stout seventh with three.

UW-Whitewater went unbeaten in all six of its WIAC dual meets during the regular season, while UW-La Crosse finished 5-1, UW-Eau Claire 4-2, UW-Oshkosh 3-3, UW-Stevens Point 2-4, UW-River Falls 1-5 and UW-Stout 0-6.

The finish in the regular-season standings accounted for one-third of the overall title criteria, while the conference championship accounted for the remaining two-thirds.

As a top-four overall finisher, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater qualified for next spring's WIAC Team Tournament. The event will be held April 25 at UW-Whitewater. The winner of the WIAC Team Tournament will earn the league's automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Division III Championship.
