Titans Score Twice In Second Half To Defeat Falcons

UW-Oshkosh took a major step in hosting a first-round match of the upcoming WIAC Women's Soccer Championship (presented by Culver's) by defeating UW-River Falls, 2-0, on Saturday (Oct. 20) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The Titans improved their WIAC record to 3-3 (6-9-1 overall) with the win, and UW-Oshkosh can earn the third or fourth seed for the six-team league tournament with a victory at UW-Platteville next Saturday (Oct. 27) in the regular-season finale.

UW-Oshkosh can also collect one of the two first-round host positions for the WIAC Championship with two non-winning league contests this week by two other teams – UW-Eau Claire (2-2-1 WIAC, 6-7-1 overall), UW-Platteville (2-3, 8-7) or UW-River Falls (2-3, 9-7-1).

The WIAC Championship begins Oct. 30 with the fifth and sixth seeds visiting the third and fourth seeds, respectively. The first and second seeds will then host semifinal round matches against the first-round winners on Nov. 1. The highest remaining seed from the semifinals will then host the championship contest on Nov. 3. The winner of the WIAC tournament will earn the league's automatic berth into the 2018 NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Oshkosh scored both of its goals against UW-River Falls on Saturday in the second half.

The Titans took a 1-0 lead when Delaney Karl converted a 20-yard kick during the 75th minute (74:18) of play. Karl's second goal of the season followed a pass from Hannah Zacher.

UW-Oshkosh then doubled its advantage over the Falcons with Mallory Knight's team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 86th minute (85:14). Knight scored her goal off a pass from Karl.

UW-Oshkosh, which has gone 3-0-1 during its last four matches against UW-River Falls, dominated counts on Saturday in shots (23-12), shots on goal (11-4) and corner kicks (4-1).

Karl owned 10 of UW-Oshkosh's shots and five of the Titans' shots on goal. UW-Oshkosh also received four shots from Knight and two apiece from Mary Schmidt and Addie Schmitz.

UW-River Falls, which has failed to score in each of its last three matches, was paced in its shot total against the Titans by the three attempts of Mariah Troje and the two of Erika Lagoon.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Erin Toomey preserved the Titans' fourth shutout of the season by saving four shots, two in each half.

Haley Crosby guarded the UW-River Falls goal and stopped nine of the 11 UW-Oshkosh shots she faced. Crosby kept the match scoreless at intermission by saving five first-half shots.

UW-Oshkosh begins its final week of the regular season at St. Norbert College on Wednesday (Oct. 24).
