Oles Spoil Titans' Home Opener

A goal in the 72nd minute of play proved to be the difference as St. Olaf College (Minn.) defeated UW-Oshkosh, 1-0, in a defensive women's soccer match held Saturday (Sept. 8) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Mackenzie Schoustra provided the scoring for the Oles (1-1-1) when she kicked an 18-yard shot into the net at the 71:24 mark of the contest. Schoustra's match-winning score followed a pass from Emily Lecy and gave UW-Oshkosh a loss in its first home match of the 2018 season.

The teams combined for just nine shots on goal and 23 attempts overall. Erin Toomey had six goalkeeping saves for UW-Oshkosh (1-1-1) while Brynne Davis had two for St. Olaf College.

The Oles launched eight of their 12 shots in the first half, including attempts by Kaylyn Billmeyer in the seventh, Rose Sandell in the ninth and Schoustra in the 17th and 29th minute.

UW-Oshkosh attempted seven of its 11 shots in the opening period, including a Delaney Karl kick that bounced off the crossbar in the 12th minute. Karl also had a shot saved by the Oles' Davis in the 35th minute.

With the exception of Schoustra's goal, action for the second half went relatively quiet as the teams managed just four shots each. St. Olaf College's Davis saved an Alexis Brewer shot in the 57th minute while UW-Oshkosh's Toomey stopped shots by Schoustra in the 71st and 72nd.

Schoustra and Sandell paced the Oles with five and two shots, respectively. The Titans were led by the five shots from Karl and the two apiece from Brewer and Schmitz.

The teams finished their sixth all-time meeting (series tied 3-3) with just three corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh returns to J. J. Keller Field on Sunday (Sept. 9) for a match against the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
