13th-Ranked Blazers Hold Off Titans

Goalkeepers Megan Favorite and Heather Kaluzniak combined for nine saves as the 13th-ranked College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) women's soccer team defeated UW-Oshkosh, 1-0, on Sunday (Oct. 5) in Collegeville, Minn.

Peggy Renier scored the Blazers' winning goal off a pass from Gracie Vaughan during the 51st minute (50:06) of play. The second-half goal was Renier's third of the season.

The teams were scoreless in the first half, thanks in large part to the play of Favorite and Kaluzniak. The College of Saint Benedict goalkeeping tandem stopped seven UW-Oshkosh shots in the opening period, including four by Favorite who played the first 18:33 of the match.

The second-half featured Kaluzniak making two saves to preserve the Blazers' ninth shutout of the season. She ended the match with five saves. UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Nina Muzi stopped three College of Saint Benedict shots in the second half after blocking one in the first.

UW-Oshkosh, which entered the contest with a three-game winning streak, outshot the Blazers (10-2) by counts of 12-6 in the first half and 8-6 in the second. The Titans (6-4-1) had advantages of 9-5 in shots on goal and 6-2 in corner kicks.

The Elliott sisters, Robyn and Rachel, led UW-Oshkosh with six and five shots, respectively. Katelyn Fladten and Courtney Leister both launched three shots and Felicia Retrum two for the Titans.

The College of Saint Benedict had 10 players attempt a shot, including Renier and Vaughan who fired two each.

UW-Oshkosh returns home for a matchup with seventh-ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) on Wednesday (Oct. 8) at J. J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
