John Named To Scholar All-Region Team

UW-Oshkosh women's soccer player Michelle John (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) has been named as a honorable mention selection on the 2005 Scholar All-Central Region Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). John, a midfielder, was one of 83 collegiate players voted to the squad as a first team, second team, third team or honorable mention selection.

John, who owns a 3.37 cumulative grade point average as an elementary education major, started all 20 contests for the Titans this past season and totaled three goals and five assists for 11 points. She had two match-winning goals, including the decisive score in UW-Oshkosh's 1-0 victory over UW-Stevens Point. Defensively, John helped the Titans post nine shutouts and a 1.03 goals against average. John's performance earned her NCAA Division III All-Central Region third team and All-WIAC first team honors.

Last year, John started all 22 matches for UW-Oshkosh and totaled five goals and eight assists for 18 points. John's effort gained her NCAA Division III All-Central Region second team honors. In 2003, John started all 21 games for the Titans and compiled five goals and three assists for 13 points.

To be eligible for consideration for the Women's Scholar All-Region Team, a player must be at least a junior in academic standing, have no less than a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, start at least 50 percent of the team’s games and be nominated by an NSCAA member coach.

UW-Oshkosh compiled a 13-6-1 record during the 2005 season, including a second-place 6-1-1 mark in the WIAC.

John, Stroud Receive All-Region Awards

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has named UW-Oshkosh women's soccer players Michelle John (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) and Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin) to the 2005 NCAA Division III All-Central Region Team.

John, a midfielder, and Stroud, a defender, were selected to the third team after leading UW-Oshkosh to a 13-6-1 record and a second-place finish in the WIAC standings.

John, who was an All-Region second team choice a year ago, started all 20 contests for the Titans this past season and totaled three goals and five assists for 11 points. She had the match-winning goal in UW-Oshkosh’s 1-0 victory over UW-Stevens Point and 8-0 victory over Concordia University.

Last year, John started all 22 matches for UW-Oshkosh and totaled five goals and eight assists for 18 points. In 2003, John started all 21 games for the Titans and compiled five goals and three assists for 13 points.

Stroud started all 20 matches for UW-Oshkosh this past season and led a defensive unit that posted nine shutouts and a 1.03 goals against average. She also totaled three goals and five assists for 11 points. Stroud had the match-winning goal in UW-Oshkosh's 3-2 victory over UW-River Falls.

Last year, Stroud started 20 of the 22 matches that she played in for the Titans and counted three goals and three assists for nine points. In 2003, Stroud started all 21 matches for UW-Oshkosh and compiled five goals and one assist for 11 points. In 2002, Stroud started 11 of the 18 contests that she played in for the Titans and totaled one goal.

Players selected to the NCAA Division III All-Central Region first team were Julie Sapko of Loras College (Iowa), Louisa Bigelow, Annie Borton, Cara Goff and Meghan Leahy of Macalester College (Minn.), Diana Connett, Jacqui Deleon and Renee Neuner of the University of Chicago (Ill.) and Jennifer Binger, Laura Koontz and Colleen McAndrews of Wheaton College (Ill.).

All-WIAC Team Includes Four Titans

Two-time honorees Michelle John (Jr. • Whitefish Bay), Nicole Kunick (Sr. • Green Bay) and Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin) were among four UW-Oshkosh players named to the 2005 All-WIAC women’s soccer team. The league’s nine head coaches selected the 23-member squad, which also included UW-Oshkosh’s Amanda Matzke (Fr. • Green Bay).

John, a midfielder, started all 20 contests for the Titans this past season and totaled three goals and five assists for 11 points. She had the match-winning goal in UW-Oshkosh’s victories over UW-Stevens Point and Concordia University. John, who also received All-WIAC honors in 2004, has compiled 13 goals and 16 assists during her three seasons with the Titans.

Kunick, a forward, started all 20 games for UW-Oshkosh this past year and totaled four goals and four assists for 12 points. She had the match-winning goal in UW-Oshkosh’s victories over Lawrence University, UW-La Crosse and UW-Stout. Kunick, who also received All-WIAC mention in 2004, concluded her UW-Oshkosh career with 33 goals and 77 points, both school records.

Stroud, a defender, started all 20 matches for the Titans this past season and totaled three goals and five assists for 11 points. She had the match-winning goal in UW-Oshkosh’s victory over UW-River Falls. Stroud, who also received All-WIAC accolades in 2004, helped Titans record nine shutouts and a 1.03 goals against average. Her career totals feature 12 goals and nine assists.

Matzke, a midfielder, started 18 of the Titans’ 20 games this past season and totaled eight goals and five assists for 21 points. She had the match-winning goal in UW-Oshkosh’s victory over UW-Whitewater. Matzke is the first UW-Oshkosh freshman to receive All-WIAC recognition.

Other players gaining All-WIAC honors were Marcia Foltz, Liz Kooistra, Emily Meisinger, Allison Smith and Becky Westbrook of UW-Eau Claire, Stephanie Harbaugh, Sarah Swoboda and Amy Todd of UW-La Crosse, Lindsay Kowaleski and Laurie Trifone of UW-Platteville, Sarah Carlson, Amy Jensen, Ashley Peterson and Hannah Tvedt of UW-River Falls, Amanda Prawat and Kimi Wiepz of UW-Stevens Point, Michelle Lizotte and Heidi Schultz of UW-Stout and Lindsey Kohlbeck of UW-Whitewater.

UW-River Falls’ Carlson was named the league’s Player of the Year and UW-Eau Claire’s Sean Yengo as the conference’s Coach of the Year.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the 2005 season with a 13-6-1 record, including a second-place 6-1-1 mark in the WIAC. Since 2000, the Titans have booked an 80-32-8 record, highlighted by listings of 15-4 in 2000 and 15-4-3 in 2004.

Blugolds Rally To Edge Titans In WIAC Tournament Final

Top-seeded UW-Eau Claire rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat second-seeded UW-Oshkosh, 2-1, in the championship match of the WIAC Women's Soccer Tournament held Saturday (Nov. 5) in Eau Claire.

The WIAC Tournament title is the first for UW-Eau Claire (15-2-4) after eight previous setbacks in the event's championship match. As WIAC Tournament champion, UW-Eau Claire receives the league's automatic bid to the 60-team NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Oshkosh, which dropped a 1-0 decision to UW-Eau Claire on Sept. 30 in Oshkosh, took an early 1-0 lead as Maggie Hoffman (So. • Waukesha) lofted a shot into the goal just 2:44 into play. The unassisted goal was Hoffman's fifth of the season. UW-Oshkosh went to intermission leading 1-0 after posting a 7-4 advantage in shots during the first 45 minutes of competition.

UW-Eau Claire, the 24th-ranked team in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, reversed the shot count in the second half by compiling a 7-4 advantage. The Blugolds tied the score on Liz Kooistra's goal at the 57:35 mark of the contest. Kooistra's match-tying goal was assisted by Emily Meisinger.

The Blugolds then took the lead 52 seconds later when Maria Iaizzo headed in a cross from Jessica Millard at the 58:27 mark of the match. The contest remained scoreless the rest of the way.

Both teams played well despite the rainy and cold conditions. UW-Eau Claire fired 11 shots and totaled four corner kicks, while UW-Oshkosh launched 11 shots and compiled three corner kicks. Iaizzo and Kooistra took three shots each to lead the Blugolds, while Nicole Kunick (Sr. • Green Bay) took four shots to pace the Titans. UW-Oshkosh also had Hoffman and Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin) take two shots each.

UW-Eau Claire split its goalkeeping duties as Liz Weirick played the first half and Allie Rivard the second. Weirick recorded both UW-Eau Claire saves in the contest. UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) stopped six shots in the match.

UW-Oshkosh was appearing in the championship match of the WIAC Tournament for the second straight season. The Titans dropped a 1-0 decision to UW-Stevens Point a year ago.

Titans Overcome Halftime Deficit To Edge Blue Devils In WIAC Tournament Semifinal

UW-Oshkosh overcame a first-half scare to defeat UW-Stout, 2-1, in a semifinal round contest of the WIAC Women’s Soccer Tournament held Friday (Nov. 4) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh (13-5-1), which ousted UW-Stout in the semifinal round of last year’s WIAC Tournament, advances to the championship match against UW-Eau Claire (14-2-4). The two teams will play for the WIAC Tournament title on Saturday (Nov. 5) at 1 p.m. in Eau Claire. The winner of the WIAC Tournament receives the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

UW-Stout (10-3-5) took a 1-0 lead to intermission as Shannon Hermes scored an unassisted goal at 34:08 mark of the contest. The Titans, who played to a scoreless tie with UW-Stout on Sept. 17 in Oshkosh, trailed at halftime despite posting a 9-6 advantage in shots.

UW-Oshkosh rallied for the victory by scoring on two of its 16 shots in the second half.

The Titans tied the score on Amanda Matzke’s (Fr. • Green Bay) penalty kick at the 62:29 mark of the contest. The goal was her eighth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh scored the winning goal on a shot by Nicole Kunick (Sr. • Green Bay) with just 118 seconds left in the 90-minute match. Kunick’s fourth goal of the season came on an assist by Maggie Hoffman (So. • Waukesha).

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) had three saves in the first half and one in the second. UW-Stout goalkeeper Charla Buxbaum halted 15 UW-Oshkosh shots, including 11 in the second half.

UW-Oshkosh, which limited UW-Stout to just three shots in the second half, had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Titans To Meet UW-Stout In WIAC Tournament Semifinal

UW-Oshkosh will make its sixth straight appearance in the semifinals of the WIAC Women's Soccer Tournament when it plays UW-Stout at 2 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 4) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh (12-5-1) received a bye into the semifinal round after finishing second in the WIAC's regular season standings with a 6-1-1 record. The Titans, who have gone 12-2-1 in their last 15 matches, are seeded second in the tournament for the first time since 2001.

Third-seed UW-Stout (10-2-5) advanced to its game with UW-Oshkosh after posting a 2-1 overtime win over UW-La Crosse (9-7-2) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday (Nov. 1). It was UW-Stout's first WIAC Tournament victory since 1996.

UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stout are meeting twice in a season for the second consecutive year. The Titans own a 9-2-3 record against the Blue Devils, including a scoreless tie on Oct. 17 in Menomonie. Last year, UW-Oshkosh tallied a 5-3 win over UW-Stout in the semifinals of the WIAC Tournament after playing to a 2-2 tie with the Blue Devils during the regular season.

Like UW-Oshkosh, UW-Eau Claire (13-2-4) also received a bye into the semifinals. The Blugolds were awarded the tournament's top seed after capturing the WIAC's regular season championship with a 6-0-2 record.

UW-Eau Claire will host fifth-seed UW-River Falls (12-3-3) at 11 a.m. on Friday in the semifinals. UW-River Falls moved to its game with UW-Eau Claire after recording a 1-0 overtime win over fourth-seed UW-Stevens Point (8-7-2) in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The championship match of the WIAC Tournament is scheduled for Saturday (Nov. 5) at 1 p.m. in Eau Claire. The winner of the WIAC Tournament receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

Titans Post Shutout In Regular Season Finale

Maggie Hoffman (So. • Waukesha) and Dana Gudel (So. • Middleton) scored second half goals as the UW-Oshkosh women’s soccer team defeated Elmhurst College (Ill.), 2-0, on Saturday (Oct. 29) in Elmhurst, Ill. It was the regular season finale for both teams.

Hoffman broke a scoreless debate with her unassisted goal at the 47:56 mark of the contest. The goal was Hoffman’s fourth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh (12-5-1) maintained its 1-0 lead until Gudel scored on a direct kick with just 52 seconds left in the 90-minute match. Gudel’s goal was her first of the season and the second of her collegiate career.

UW-Oshkosh fired 18 shots in the contest, including 10 in the second half. Elmhurst College (5-13-1) launched just six shots in the match. The Bluejays posted a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) stopped four Elmhurst College shots to record her fifth shutout of the season. Elmhurst College goalkeeper Amy LeFurgy halted four UW-Oshkosh shots in the match.

UW-Oshkosh’s victory was its 10th in 12 matches. The Titans entered the match as the seventh-ranked team in the NCAA Division III Central Region.

UW-Oshkosh returns to action on Nov. 4 by playing UW-River Falls (11-3-3), UW-Stevens Point (8-6-2) or UW-Stout (10-3-5) in the semifinal round of the WIAC Tournament. WIAC regular season champion UW-Eau Claire (13-2-4) will host the semifinals and final of the league tournament.

Titans Slay Green Knights

The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team celebrated its last home match of the 2005 season with a 3-1 victory over St. Norbert College on Wednesday (Oct. 26) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

St. Norbert College (4-12) took an early 1-0 lead as Meredith Whiteley scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season just 4:40 into play. Assisting on the goal were Corey Klein and Kate Kaminski.

UW-Oshkosh (11-5-1), however, bounced back to score three times between the 23rd and 36th minute of the contest to post its fifth win over the Green Knights in six matches.

UW-Oshkosh had three different players register goals as Amanda Matzke (Fr. • Green Bay) tied the score at the 22:48 mark of the contest and Melodie Romanowich (Fr. • Wauwatosa) put the Titans ahead at the 29:43 mark of the match. It was the seventh goal of the season for Matzke and the team-leading 10th for Romanowich.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III Central Region, extended its lead to 3-1 when Katy Werginz (Jr. • Waupaca) scored her sixth goal of the year at the 35:13 mark of the match.

UW-Oshkosh compiled advantages of 29-5 in shots and 10-0 on corner kicks. The Titans were also called offsides nine times.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) had one save in the contest, while St. Norbert College goalkeeper Hannah Severson tallied eight.

In addition to Barutha, Wednesday's game also marked the final contest on the Titans' home turf for UW-Oshkosh seniors Nicole Kunick (Green Bay), Kristen Malmstrom (Brookfield) and Stacy Stroud (New Berlin).

Titans Triumph Over Spartans

Katy Werginz (Jr. • Waupaca) and Melodie Romanowich (Fr. • Wauwatosa) scored goals as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team defeated Aurora University (Ill.), 2-0, on Friday (Oct. 21) in Aurora, Ill.

Werginz gave UW-Oshkosh (10-5-1) a 1-0 lead when she scored an unassisted goal in the 35th minute (34:36) of play. The goal was her fifth of the year.

Romanowich extended the Titans' advantage to 2-0 when she scored an unassisted goal in the 61st minute (61:00) of competition. The goal was her team-leading ninth of the season.

Aurora University (11-6) suffered the loss despite having advantages of 9-7 in shots and 6-4 in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh recorded its eighth shutout of the season behind the goalkeeping of Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield). Barutha stopped five Aurora University shots en route to her 13th career shutout. Aurora University goalkeeper Angela Garza halted two UW-Oshkosh shots in the match. The Spartans also had another save by a defender.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III Central Region, has won three of its five meetings with Aurora University.

Titans Pull Away To Defeat Pioneers

The UW-Oshkosh women’s soccer team scored three goals within nine minutes of each other in the second half to pull away and defeat UW-Platteville, 3-0, on Wednesday (Oct. 19) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh remained unbeaten in 13 matches against UW-Platteville by getting unassisted goals from Maggie Hoffman (So. • Waukesha), Michelle John (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) and Amanda Matzke (Fr. • Green Bay).

The Titans broke a scoreless tie when Hoffman sailed a shot into the goal at the 52:58 mark of the contest. It took just 40 seconds for UW-Oshkosh to increase its lead as John scored a goal at the 53:38 mark of the match. The Titans closed their scoring on a goal by Matzke at the 61:55 mark of the game. It was the sixth goal of the season for Matzke and the third for both Hoffman and John.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III Central Region, took 24 shots in the match, including 13 in the first half. UW-Platteville was held to just four shots, two in each half. The Titans posted a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh recorded its sixth shutout of the season behind the goalkeeping of Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) and Christine Wojtanowski (So. • Slinger). Both players stopped one shot in the match, with Barutha guarding the goal for 70 minutes and Wojtanowski for 20. UW-Platteville goalkeeper Laurie Trifone played the entire contest and saved 11 shots.

UW-Oshkosh (9-5-1/6-1-1 WIAC) kept its WIAC title hopes alive with the victory over UW-Platteville (7-6-3/2-6 WIAC). The Titans, who have played all eight of their WIAC matches, trail first-place UW-Eau Claire by one-half game in the league standings. UW-Eau Claire (10-1-3/5-0-1 WIAC) finishes its WIAC schedule with games against UW-Stout on Friday (Oct. 21) and UW-Superior on Saturday (Oct. 22).

Titans Fall To Defending National Champion

Defending NCAA Division III women’s soccer champion Wheaton College (Ill.) scored three consecutive first-half goals to defeat UW-Oshkosh, 3-2, on Wednesday (Oct. 12) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (8-5-1) took a 1-0 lead just 11:34 into the match when Amanda Matzke (Fr. • Green Bay) scored on a penalty kick. The goal was Matzke’s fifth of the season.

Wheaton College (11-2), the ninth-ranked team in the NCAA Division III, quickly overcame its deficit with a pair of goals in the 19th minute of play. The Thunder tied the score on a goal by Mary Doleshal at the 18:10 mark of the match and took a 2-1 lead on a goal by All-American Jen Binger 32 seconds later.

Wheaton College extended its advantage to 3-1 when Karen Jezequel scored at the 32:33 mark of the game. The Thunder went to intermission holding a 3-1 lead.

UW-Oshkosh cut into Wheaton College’s lead when Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin) scored on an assist from Matzke at the 82:23 mark of the match. The goal was Stroud’s third of the year.

Wheaton College, which has won 36 of its last 39 matches, outshot UW-Oshkosh, 15-9. The Titans, who had gone 8-1-1 in their previous 10 contests, posted a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) tallied five saves in the match, while Wheaton College goalkeeper Ashley Vratil counted one.

Titans Pummel Falcons

The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team scored seven second-half goals en route to an 8-0 victory over Concordia University on Sunday (Oct. 9) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (8-4-1), which has outscored its last three opponents by a 19-1 tally, took a 1-0 halftime lead as Michelle John (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) scored just 15 seconds (44:45) before the break. The goal was John's second of the season.

UW-Oshkosh held its 1-0 advantage until Katy Werginz (Jr. • Waupaca) registered her fourth goal of the season at the 60:47 mark of the contest. The Titans then bombarded the Falcons with six goals in the final 29 minutes of play, including three by Melodie Romanowich (Fr. • Wauwatosa), to record their largest margin of victory in 37 matches.

Romanowich gave UW-Oshkosh a 5-0 lead when she scored at the 70:58 mark of the contest. She also scored twice in the final five minutes of play, counting the Titans' seventh and eighth goals at the 84:21 and 88:03 marks of the match, respectively. Romanowich leads the Titans with eight goals on the season.

UW-Oshkosh's scoring parade also included goals by Kristine Alioto (Fr. • Colgate), Mindy Vinje (So. • Madison) and Maggie Hoffman (So. • Waukesha). Alioto scored at the 67:31 mark of the match to give UW-Oshkosh a 3-0 lead, while Vinje scored at the 68:05 mark of the contest to give the Titans a 4-0 advantage. Hoffman gave the Titans a 6-0 lead with her goal at the 80:57 mark of the game. It was the second goal of the season for both Alioto and Hoffman and the first for Vinje.

UW-Oshkosh had six players collect assists in the match as Maggie Hoffman compiled two and John, Romanowich, Jessica Hoffman (So. • Waukesha), Elizabeth Kutzke (Fr. • Beaver Dam) and Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin) one each.

UW-Oshkosh split its goalkeeping duties three ways as Christie Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) played 67:31, Chris Wojtanowski (So. • Slinger) 12:26 and Amanda Dobbs (Fr. • Dousman) 10:03. Dobbs had the lone save for the Titans. Goalkeeper Daria Klotz allowed eight goals and stopped seven shots while playing all 90 minutes for Concordia University.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III Central Region, outshot Concordia University (4-8-1), 30-1. The Titans also had a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Titans Net Eagles

The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team scored the first five goals of the match and coasted to a 5-1 victory over UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Oct. 5) in La Crosse.

UW-Oshkosh (7-4-1/5-1-1 WIAC) took a quick 1-0 lead as Nicole Kunick (Sr. • Green Bay) scored on assists from Amanda Matzke (Fr. • Green Bay) and Katy Werginz (Jr. • Waupaca) just 47 seconds into play. The goal was Kunick's third of the season.

UW-Oshkosh, which has won five of its last six matches against UW-La Crosse (5-4-1/1-2-1 WIAC), doubled its advantage at the 24:24 mark of the contest as Werginz scored on an assist from Matzke. It was the third goal of the season for Werginz.

Matzke scored UW-Oshkosh's third and fifth goal of the match on assists from Kunick and Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin). The goals scored at the 27:52 and 46:46 marks of the contest were Matzke's third and fourth of the season.

UW-Oshkosh's fourth goal of the match was scored unassisted by Jessica Hoffman (So. • Waukesha) at the 45:28 mark of the game. The goal was Hoffman's first of the season.

UW-La Crosse avoided the shutout at the 69:54 mark of the match as Amy Todd scored an unassisted goal.

UW-Oshkosh outshot UW-La Crosse, 28-9, and posted a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) had three saves in the match. Stephanie Harbaugh started in goal for the Eagles and played 56 minutes. Amanda Clark played the final 34 minutes, recording five saves. Another UW-La Crosse save was recorded by a defender.

Titans Swat Yellowjackets

Melodie Romanowich (Fr. • Wauwatosa) scored twice while Nicole Kunick (Sr. • Green Bay) established a pair of school records as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team trounced UW-Superior, 6-0, on Sunday (Oct. 2) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Romanowich, one of five players to register goals for UW-Oshkosh, gave the Titans a 2-0 lead when she sent shots into the net at the 30:15 and 48:30 marks of the contest. Romanowich leads the Titans with five goals on the season.

Matzke scored at the 62:16 mark of the match to give the Titans a 4-0 lead, while Alioto scored her first collegiate goal at the 77:27 mark to give UW-Oshkosh a 5-0 advantage. U'Ren extended UW-Oshkosh's lead to 6-0 with her goal at the 84:20 mark of the game.

UW-Oshkosh outshot UW-Superior (6-4/0-4 WIAC), 33-3, and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. The contest featured 10 saves by the goalkeepers as UW-Superior's Emily Cochran stopped eight and UW-Oshkosh's Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) and Chris Wojtanowski (So. • Slinger) one each.

UW-Oshkosh is unbeaten in 13 matches against UW-Superior, outscoring the Yellowjackets by an 80-7 tally.

Titans Suffer First WIAC Loss

Marcia Foltz scored the lone goal of the match as the UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team edged UW-Oshkosh, 1-0, on Friday (Sept. 30) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Foltz counted her third goal of the season by lofting a 25-yard shot into the wind over UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) in the 72nd minute of play (71:28).

UW-Oshkosh had an opportunity to tie the score with 40 seconds remaining in the match, but Michelle John's (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) 20-yard blast was deflected by UW-Eau Claire goalkeeper Allie Rivard.

UW-Eau Claire took 16 shots in the game, with Foltz firing six to lead the Blugolds. UW-Oshkosh totaled 10 shots in the contest, with John launching three to pace the Titans.

UW-Eau Claire posted its seventh shutout of the season as Rivard stopped five shots while guarding the goal in the second half and Liz Weirick one while watching the goal in the first. The Blugolds also had a defender record a save in the second half. UW-Oshkosh's Barutha halted seven shots during the match.

UW-Eau Claire (7-1-2/3-0 WIAC), ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III Central Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, defeated UW-Oshkosh for the first time in three matches. The Blugolds are the lone unbeaten and untied team in the WIAC.

UW-Oshkosh (5-4-1/3-1-1 WIAC) had its six-match unbeaten streak end with the loss. The Titans had gone 5-0-1 in its previous six contests.

Penalty Kick Lifts Titans Past Pointers

A penalty kick with 3:19 left in the match proved to be the difference as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday (Sept. 27) in Stevens Point.

Neither team was able to score until UW-Oshkosh (5-3-1/3-0-1 WIAC) had a two-on-one break late in the contest. UW-Oshkosh's Nicole Kunick (Sr. • Green Bay) went down on a foul near the top of the penalty box, resulting in the penalty kick that Michelle John (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) booted to the lower left corner of the goal for the victory.

The rematch of last year's WIAC Tournament title game marked the first time that UW-Stevens Point had ever been shutout at home by a league opponent, a span of 63 matches. It was also UW-Oshkosh's first victory over UW-Stevens Point, as the Titans are now 1-13-1 in the all-time series.

UW-Oshkosh, which extended its unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1 record), held a 12-11 edge in shots. The Titans had just two shots on goal, including the penalty kick. UW-Stevens Point had the first five shots of the second half before UW-Stevens Point (5-3-1/2-1-1 WIAC) picked up momentum in the final 19 minutes.

Amanda Prawat fired a shot off the post with 17 minutes left after Kaylee Weise had a shot bounce off the post for the Pointers in the first half. Prawat also had a solid scoring chance early in the match that was stopped by UW-Oshkosh goalie Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield), who totaled four saves in the shutout win. It was the first time that the Pointers have been shutout in nine matches this season.

Titans Bounce Back To Clip Warhawks

Amanda Matzke (Fr. • Green Bay) scored the match-winning goal in the 72nd minute of play as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team rallied back from an early deficit to defeat UW-Whitewater, 2-1, on Friday (Sept. 23) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Matzke gave the Titans their one-goal victory when she scored on assists from Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin) and Nicole Kunick (Sr. • Green Bay) at the 71:11 mark of the contest. Matzke's goal, the first of her collegiate career, finished a UW-Oshkosh comeback that began when UW-Whitewater's Alyssa Palmer scored an unassisted goal just 88 seconds into play.

UW-Oshkosh (4-3-1/2-0-1 WIAC) evened the count at 1-1 when Katy Werginz (Jr. • Waupaca) scored on assists from Michelle John (Jr. • Whitefish Bay) and Jessica Hoffman (So. • Waukesha) at the 38:55 mark of the contest. It was the second goal of the season for Werginz.

UW-Oshkosh outshot UW-Whitewater (2-5/0-3 WIAC), 26-5, including 15-3 in the second half. The Titans had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Amanda Dobbs (Fr. • Dousman) made two saves, both in the second half. UW-Whitewater goalkeeper Aimee Kitson stopped 10 shots, with another going to a defender.

UW-Oshkosh's victory was its sixth straight over UW-Whitewater. The Titans lead the all-time series with the Warhawks by a 10-3-2 tally.

Titans Thrash Vikings

The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team scored three times in each half to rout Lawrence University, 6-0, on Tuesday (Sept. 20) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

UW-Oshkosh (3-3-1) had five different players score goals against Lawrence University (2-4), including Melodie Romanowich (Fr. • Wauwatosa) who registered one in both the first and second periods. Romanowich gave UW-Oshkosh a 3-0 lead in the 44th minute (43:10) of play and a 5-0 advantage in the 79th (78:03).

Also scoring goals for the Titans were Nicole Kunick (Sr. • Green Bay), Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin), Lindsey Cordes (Fr. • Winona, Minn.) and Katy Werginz (Jr. • Waupaca).

Kunick scored just 4:27 into the contest to give UW-Oshkosh a 1-0 lead, while Stroud doubled the Titans' advantage with her goal in the 41st minute (40:40) of action. UW-Oshkosh went ahead 4-0 on a goal by Cordes in the 71st minute (70:41) of play and 6-0 on a goal by Werginz in the 88th (87:08). It was the first collegiate goal for Cordes.

The Titans peppered the goal with 28 shots, including 16 in the first half. The Vikings fired only two shots, with both coming in the second half.

UW-Oshkosh had two goalkeepers see action as Amanda Dobbs (Fr. • Dousman) played the first half and Christine Wojtanowski (So. • Slinger) the second. Wojtanowski was credited with stopping both Lawrence University shots. Lawrence University goalkeeper Candice Gangl had seven saves, with another going to a defender.

UW-Oshkosh has won its last six matches against Lawrence University to lead the all-time series against the Vikings by a 9-2 count.

Titans, Blue Devils Play To Scoreless Tie

The UW-Oshkosh and UW-Stout women's soccer teams failed to settle their argument as they battled to a scoreless double overtime tie on Saturday (Sept. 17) in Menomonie.

Both squads had several opportunities to score during the 110-minute match, especially in overtime when UW-Stout (4-0-2/1-0-1 WIAC) sailed a shot just over the goal and UW-Oshkosh (2-3-1/1-0-1 WIAC) misfired on a close shot that was swallowed up by the goalkeeper.

UW-Oshkosh, which has gone 6-0-3 in its last nine meetings with UW-Stout, took nine of its 20 shots in the second half. The Blue Devils launched 13 shots, with five of them coming in the opening period. UW-Oshkosh had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) stopped nine UW-Stout shots to record her 11th career shutout. UW-Stout goalkeeper Charla Buxbaum had eight saves, with another going to a defender.

The match featured 35 fouls, including 20 by UW-Stout, and six yellow cards.

Titans Rally To Win WIAC Opener

The UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team overcame an early two-goal deficit to win its WIAC opener by a 3-2 count over UW-River Falls on Friday (Sept. 16) in River Falls.

UW-River Falls (4-1/0-1 WIAC) began the match with two quick goals as Kim Saufl and Sarah Carlson scored in the first six minutes of play. Saufl gave the Falcons an advantage just 95 seconds into the contest when she tapped in a cross off a free kick from Ashley Peterson. UW-River Falls doubled its lead when Carlson headed in a corner kick from Peterson at the 5:43 mark of the match.

UW-Oshkosh (2-3/1-0 WIAC) took a 2-1 deficit to intermission as Melodie Romanowich (Fr. • Wauwatosa) scored at the 37:39 mark of the contest. Romanowich's first collegiate goal was assisted by Mindy Vinje (So. • Madison) and Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin).

UW-Oshkosh scored on two if its eight shots in the second half to win the match. The Titans tied the skirmish at 2-2 when Amy U'Ren (Jr. • Mt. Horeb) scored on an assist from Amanda Matzke (Fr. • Green Bay) at the 64:12 mark of the contest. UW-Oshkosh finished its comeback with 14:54 to play as Stroud headed in a cross from Katy Werginz (Jr. • Waupaca).

The Titans ended the match with 18 shots, including four by Stroud. The Falcons fired 14 shots, including three by Carlson and Diana Hermes. UW-Oshkosh had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Guarding the goal, UW-Oshkosh's Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) and UW-River Falls' Hannah Tvedt each stopped eight opposing shots.

UW-Oshkosh's victory was just its fifth in 15 meetings with UW-River Falls. The Falcons lead the all-time series by a 9-5-1 tally.

Titans Edge Oles In Double Overtime

Maggie Hoffman (So. • Waukesha) scored in the second overtime period as the UW-Oshkosh women's soccer team edged St. Olaf College (Minn.), 1-0, on Sunday (Sept. 11) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

Hoffmann recorded her match-winning goal on an assist from Amy U'Ren (Jr. • Mt. Horeb) in the 104th minute (104:00) of play. Hoffman's score, her first of the year, helped UW-Oshkosh end a four-match losing streak that dated back to last season.

UW-Oshkosh (1-3) outshot St. Olaf College (1-2-1), 23-16, with the Titans holding advantages of 10-6 after the first half, 19-14 after the second period and 20-16 after the first overtime session. Hoffman and Stacy Stroud (Sr. • New Berlin) led the Titans with four shots each.

UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) earned the victory by stopping five St. Olaf College shots. It was the 10th career shutout for Barutha. Emily Rolfsmeyer made five saves while guarding the goal for the Oles.

UW-Oshkosh and St. Olaf College also played in 2003, a 3-0 victory for the Titans.

Titans Shut Out In Home Opener

Christina Lisk scored in the 22nd minute of play to give the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Sept. 10) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.

The College of St. Benedict outshot UW-Oshkosh, 13-11, including 7-3 in the first half. The Titans posted a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Lisk fired five shots to lead the Blazers (1-1-1), including her goal at the 21:18 mark of the match. Nicole Kunick (Sr. • Green Bay) dispatched six shots and Amanda Matzke (Fr. • Green Bay) two to pace the Titans (0-3).

College of St. Benedict goalkeeper Amanda Broadbent halted five UW-Oshkosh shots, including three in the second half. UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield) stopped six College of St. Benedict shots, with three coming in each period.

The College of St. Benedict has won six of its seven meetings with UW-Oshkosh. The Blazers' latest victory over the Titans spoiled UW-Oshkosh's 2005 home opener.

Ducks Come Back To Defeat Titans

The Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) women’s soccer team erased a two-goal deficit to earn a 4-2 victory over UW-Oshkosh on Sunday (Sept. 4) in Baltimore, Md.

UW-Oshkosh (0-2) jumped to a quick 2-0 lead over its first-time opponent as Jenny Drott (Fr. • Mukwonago) scored in both the fifth (4:20) and 17th (16:13) minute of action. The goals were the first and second of her UW-Oshkosh career.

Stevens Institute of Technology (1-1) followed Drott’s second goal with a pair of goals in the next eight minutes of play. Kiley Rode cut the Ducks’ deficit to 2-1 with a goal at the 18:24 mark of the contest, while Salme Cook tied the score at 2-2 with a direct kick from 20 yards out at the 23:23 mark.

Stevens Institute of Technology, which posted an 18-2-2 record and received a bid to the NCAA Division III Championship a year ago, continued its momentum in the second half as Gina Crifasi and Megan Legendre scored at the 68:45 and 78:29 marks of the match, respectively.

Titans Fall To Red Dragons In Season Opener

State University of New York-Oneonta, ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, put together a three-goal first half en route to a 4-0 victory over the UW-Oshkosh women’s soccer team on Saturday (Sept. 3) in Baltimore, Md. It was the 2005 season opener for both squads, with UW-Oshkosh also playing its first match in the state of Maryland.

Mary Velan opened the scoring for the Red Dragons as she collected her own shot off the right post and booted it back into the net in the 21st minute (20:14) of play. State University of New York-Oneonta added two more goals in the first half when Patricia Jaeger and Christina Santoriello scored at the 27:25 and 42:42 marks of the match, respectively.

State University of New York-Oneonta, which posted a 21-2-1 record last season after capturing the NCAA Division III title in 2003, closed its scoring against UW-Oshkosh on Corinne Tisei’s goal at the 70:36 mark of the match.

State University of New York-Oneonta ripped 29 shots, with four scoring and 12 being stopped by UW-Oshkosh goalkeeper Christine Barutha (Sr. • Brookfield). UW-Oshkosh fired five shots, with three being saved by State University of New York-Oneonta goalkeeper Laura Morcone.

State University of New York-Oneonta, a first-time opponent of UW-Oshkosh, handed the Titans just their fifth loss in its last 23 matches.
