Titans Have Four Place Winners At Willson Invitational

Colten Cashmore finished fourth at 197 pounds to lead four UW-Oshkosh place winners at the Wheaton College Pete Willson Wrestling Invitational held Friday and Saturday (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) in Wheaton, Ill.

Cashmore, who compiled a 4-2 tournament record, won four of his first five bouts before losing a 3-2 decision to UW-Whitewater's Nick Sundberg in the division's third-place match.

Cashmore opened the event with wins of 12-6 over Don Phillips II of Buena Vista University (Iowa), 10-4 over Natan Jara of Wheaton College and 9-0 over UW-Platteville's Brett Schoenherr. He then lost an 8-2 result to Ben Bergen of North Central College (Ill.) before advancing to his third-place bout with a pin of Phillips II in 6:46.

Cashmore now owns a season record of 26-10 (4 pins) and a four-year career mark of 89-42 (15 pins).

UW-Oshkosh had two wrestlers finish fifth at the tournament – Denis Murphy at 125 pounds and Jordan Lemcke at 285.

Murphy compiled a 4-2 record, including a 55-second pin of Heidelberg University's (Ohio) Harrison Hadley in the fifth-place bout.

Murphy began the tournament with a 17-0 (2:08) win over Cornell College's (Iowa) Griffin Gravel and a 12-1 loss to UW-Whitewater's Mike Tortorice. Murphy then posted victories of 16-0 (3:33) over Trine University's (Ind.) Anthony Eberle and 10-7 over Concordia University Wisconsin's Marco Padilla before being pinned by Messiah College's (Pa.) Sean Redington in 5:50.

Lemcke won five of his seven bouts, including a narrow 1-0 decision over UW-Eau Claire's Noah Carter in the fifth-place contest.

Lemcke suffered a 4-2 loss to University of Mount Union's (Ohio) Grant Martin in his initial bout before rattling off wins of 3-2 over Adrian College's (Mich.) Isaiah Espinoza, 3-1 over Wheaton College's Grant Miller, 3-0 over Ferrum College's (Va.) Carlos Leyva and 13-0 over Olivet College's (Mich.) Owen Miller. Lemcke's string of victories ended with a 10-2 loss to Martin the consolation semifinal.

The Titans also received a seventh-place finish from AJ Schoenfuss at 133 pounds.

Schoenfuss tallied a 4-2 record, including a 7-5 triumph over University of Chicago's (Ill.) Griffin Seyfried in the seventh-place match.

Schoenfuss won his first two contests by fall, sticking Elmhurst College's (Ill.) Andre Neal to the mat in 2:10 and Defiance College's (Ohio) Seth Majewski to the surface in 40 seconds, before losing a 5-2 verdict to UW-Stevens Point's Matt Berlin. Schoenfuss then pinned Olivet College's Kyle Schaaf in 2:07 before being pinned by Nebraska Wesleyan University's Eron Haynes in 1:56.

The Titans also received records of 1-2 from Eli Mondrella at 141 pounds, 0-2 from Kobe Allen at 149, 2-2 from Muzi Sitshela at 157, 1-2 from Oscar Ramos at 165, 0-2 from AJ Stengel at 174 and 0-2 from John DePersia at 184.

UW-Oshkosh finished 12th among the 34 competing teams with 57 points.

North Central College captured the team title with 120.5 points while UW-Whitewater finished second with 111, John Carroll University (Ohio) third with 102, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 97 and Messiah College fifth with 88.

UW-Oshkosh wrestles a dual match at UW-Platteville on Friday (Feb. 7).
