Colten Cashmore finished fifth at 197 pounds while Denis Murphy won the consolation title at 125 to lead the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team at the Concordia University Wisconsin Open held Saturday (Nov. 23) in Mequon.
The non-scoring event featured participants from 15 collegiate programs, including NCAA Division II UW-Parkside and UW-Oshkosh's NCAA Division III associates Elmhurst College (Ill.), Loras College (Iowa), North Central College (Ill.), University of Chicago (Ill.), UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater, Wabash College (Ind.) and Wheaton College (Ill.).
Cashmore posted a 5-2 record, including a 3-1 sudden victory over UW-Stevens Point's Jerry Lipke in his fifth-place match at 197 pounds. Cashmore opened with wins of 15-0 over Ryan Jaffray of Triton College (Ill.) and 4-3 over Demarco Lee of Harper College (Ill.) before earning a 3-1 sudden victory over Lipke. Cashmore then lost bouts of 21-5 to Kobe Woods of Wartburg College (Iowa) and 3-1 to Ben Bergen of North Central College.
Murphy captured the consolation title at 125 pounds with his 9-2 victory over UW-Oshkosh teammate Luc Valdez. Murphy concluded the tournament with a 4-1 record, including a pin of Elmhurst College's Eric English in 3:34 during his second bout. Murphy followed a 17-5 loss to UW-Parkside's Joe Arroyo in his opening bout with his pin of English and wins of 12-4 over Harper College's Alex Petro and 10-1 over North Central College's Shuji Mizoguchi.
UW-Oshkosh is off until it sends wrestlers to both the UW-Parkside Open and Milwaukee School of Engineering Invitational on Dec. 7.
