Titans Rally Back For Thrilling Win Over Pioneers

Nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh battled back from an early double-digit deficit and then hung on for a 25-22 wrestling victory over UW-Platteville on Saturday (Feb. 2) in Kolf Sports Center.

UW-Platteville (4-5, 1-4 WIAC) got off to a strong start against UW-Oshkosh (7-5, 3-2) by building a 15-0 lead on wins in the contest's first three bouts.

The Titans answered the Pioneers' early success with victories in five of the next six contests to take a 25-19 advantage with one bout to go, a 285-pound skirmish between UW-Oshkosh's Jordan Lemcke and UW-Platteville's Lucius Rinehart. Lemcke went on to lose a 4-2 decision to Rinehart, but the performance was good enough as he secured the win for the Titans by avoiding a loss on a pin.

UW-Platteville opened the match with Dillon Gottschalk's 10-5 victory over AJ Schoenfuss at 125 pounds. The Pioneers then benefited from a pair of pins as Scott Arneson glued Zach McDowell to the mat in 5:58 at 133 pounds and Chase Katzenmeyer cemented Dellas Vandenberg to the surface in 4:01 at 141.

UW-Oshkosh bounced back with three straight wins, including Mark Choinski's pin of Garrett Passmore in 43 seconds at 165 pounds that gave the Titans a 17-15 lead. The victory improved Choinski's season record to 25-1 and his four-year mark to 90-16.

Prior to Choinski's victory, UW-Oshkosh's Wesam Alabed pinned Alexander Strueder in 2:47 at 149 pounds and Corey Knudsen defeated Tony Bivens, 16-0 (4:32), at 157.

UW-Platteville reclaimed the lead at 19-17 on Devan VandenBush's 9-0 victory over Husam Alabed at 174 pounds. The Pioneers' advantage didn't last long as Colten Cashmore gave UW-Oshkosh a 20-19 lead with his 1-0 win over Grant Wedepohl at 184 pounds.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, went ahead 25-19 on Beau Yineman's 20-2 (3:47) rout of Max Schmitz at 197 pounds. The win upgraded Yineman's record during his freshman season to 27-3.

Saturday's match marked the Titans' final home event of the 2018-19 season.

UW-Oshkosh returns to action next Friday (Feb. 8) at the WIAC Championship in Eau Claire. The Titans placed sixth at last year's championship with 89.5 points.
