Titans Have Two Champions, Seven Place Winners At MSOE Invitational
Mark Choinski and Beau Yineman were crowned champions as UW-Oshkosh placed fourth among 13 teams at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Wrestling Invitational held Saturday (Dec. 1) in Milwaukee.
Choinski, who won the 157-pound title at last year's tournament, captured first place in Saturday's 165-pound weight class by defeating all four of his opponents. Yineman also went unbeaten in four contests to claim the 197-pound championship.
Choinski, a two-time NCAA Division III All-American, pinned his first two challengers by sticking Sebastian Zaragoza of Elmhurst College (Ill.) to the mat in 2:37 and Jonavan Huggins of Wheaton College (Ill.) in 3:57. Choinski then recorded a 14-3 victory over Connor Hanson of UW-Eau Claire before defeating Jeremy Vester of Central College (Iowa), 9-6, in the title bout.
Yineman began his route to a first-place finish by recording a 15-1 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering's Ryan Snyder. Yineman then posted wins of 10-6 over Hannibal-LaGrange University's (Mo.) Drew McCollum and 5-2 over Central College's Gavin Babcock before ousting North Central College's (Ill.) Tyler Vittal, 7-4, in the championship match.
The Titans had a pair of third-place finishers in AJ Schoenfuss at 125 pounds and Wesam Alabed at 141.
Schoenfuss compiled a 3-1 record, including a 9-5 victory over UW-Platteville's Issac Wiegel in his third-place contest. Schoenfuss sandwiched a pair of pins around a 4-2 overtime loss to North Central College's Ian Mullen by sticking Wiegel to the mat in 58 seconds and UW-Eau Claire's Jack Marley in 2:09.
Alabed won five of six contests with his final victory being a 7-6 decision over North Central College's Marc Fleenor in the division's third-place match. Alabed lost a 13-9 result to Central College's Dan Radcliffe in his opening bout before rattling off wins of 20-1 over Hannibal-LaGrange University's Kyle Allen, 15-0 over UW-Eau Claire's Hunter Pierce, 17-5 over UW-Oshkosh's Zak Nelson and 7-6 over UW-Platteville's Chase Kastenmeyer.
Finishing fourth for UW-Oshkosh were Colten Cashmore at 184 pounds and Ben Kitslaar at 197.
Cashmore tallied a 4-2 record and lost his third-place match by a 4-2 score to Central College's Griffin McBride. Cashmore pinned his first opponent, Central College's Lane Rumelhart, in 8:51 before suffering an 11-2 loss to University of Chicago's (Ill.) Nick Ferraro. Cashmore then followed his setback with victories of 6-2 (tiebreaker) over Millikin University's (Ill.) Arnold Fox, 5-3 over Milwaukee School of Engineering's Helston Vandenbush and 4-3 over Elmhurst College's Mark Miller.
Kitslaar either won or lost by a pin as he compiled a 3-2 record. Kitslaar opened with pins in 30 seconds of Milwaukee School of Engineering's Jack Horihan and 1:30 of Elmhurst College's Zian Rosario before losing on a pin in 4:17 to North Central College's Vittal. Kitslaar then pinned Hannibal-La Grange University's McCollum in 2:04 before being ousted on a pin in 1:55 by Central College's Babcock in the section's third-place contest.
UW-Oshkosh's remaining place winner was Corey Knudsen, who finished sixth in the 149-pound weight class with a 3-3 record. Following an opening 6-0 loss to University of Chicago's Maguire Pecci, Knudsen put together consecutive wins of 9-4 over Millikin University's Jesse Ellis, 7-1 over UW-Platteville's Alexander Strueder and 7-6 over UW-Platteville's Trevor Harsh. Knudsen then lost on a pin in 4:31 to Pecci before losing an 18-2 decision to North Central College's Anthony Rink in his fifth-place match.
UW-Oshkosh totaled 93 points to earn its fourth-place finish in the team standings. Central College scored 163.5 points to successfully defend its team title while North Central College placed second with 146.5 points, UW-Platteville third with 96.5, University of Chicago fifth with 85 and Wheaton College sixth with 81.
The Titans resume their WIAC dual-meet schedule by hosting UW-Whitewater on Thursday (Dec. 6) in Kolf Sports Center.
