Titans Have Two Champions At Pointer Open

Husam Alabed and Mark Choinski won their respective weight divisions as UW-Oshkosh had nine place winners during its season-opening performance at the UW-Stevens Point Pointer Open held Saturday (Nov. 3) in Stevens Point.

The non-scoring event featured participants from seven collegiate programs, including NCAA Division II UW-Parkside and UW-Oshkosh's NCAA Division III rivals Augustana College (Ill.), Central College (Iowa) and UW-Stevens Point.

Alabed captured the 174-pound title after winning the tournament's 165-pound championship a year ago. Alabed recorded victories of 13-3 over UW-Stevens Point's Graysen Sorensen and 10-7 over Central College's Jeremy Scheuermann before sticking Central College's Chance Benadum to the mat in 1:22 during the title bout.

Choinski, a two-time NCAA Division III All-American, also won his three matches to claim the 157-pound title. Choinski defeated UW-Parkside's Aidan Yde, 12-1, and Shane Gantz, 5-3, before ousting UW-Stevens Point's Luke Smiley, 13-4, in the championship contest.

UW-Oshkosh had three second-places finishers in AJ Schoenfuss at 125 pounds, Beau Yineman at 197 and Jordan Lemcke at 285.

Schoenfuss won his first two matches before losing a 15-0 decision to UW-Parkside's Joe Arroyo in the title contest. Schoenfuss advanced to the final with pins in 1:56 of UW-Parkside's Lucas Schevikoven and 56 seconds of Central College's Anthony Posas.

Yineman opened with victories of 19-3 over Central College's Cooper Stigsell and 13-5 over UW-Stevens Point's Ross Agg before suffering a 14-5 loss to UW-Parkside's Job Ayala in the championship contest.

Lemcke compiled a 3-1 record after losing a 4-1 decision to Central College's Duncan Lee in the championship bout. Lemcke qualified for the final with a 2-0 win over UW-Stevens Point's Kody Priesgen, a pin in 1:49 of Central College's Chris Murino and a 4-2 victory over UW-Parkside's Matt Stopka.

Finishing third for the Titans were Zak Nelson at 141 pounds and Bryce Herlache at 184.

Nelson won five of his six contests, including a 5-2 triumph over UW-Parkside's Val Kochiu in the third-place match. Nelson opened with a 9-6 victory over UW-Stevens Point's Drosianos Louvaris before losing on a pin in 2:22 to UW-Parkside's Jake Polka. Nelson then pinned UW-Oshkosh's Darron Sims in 6:17 before defeating UW-Oshkosh's Eli Mondrella and UW-Stevens Point's Wyatt Thiel by scores of 8-5 and 12-6, respectively.

Herlache lost his first contest by a 5-1 result to UW-Stevens Point's Zack Moon before rattling off three straight wins, including a 16-11 decision over Concordia University Wisconsin's Merrick O'Connell in the third-place match. Herlache followed his opening setback with victories of 10-2 over Blake Johnson and 5-2 over Austin Stebane of UW-Stevens Point.

The Titans owned two other place winners as Matt Joyce finished fifth at 133 pounds with a 3-2 record (2 pins) and Wesam Alabed sixth at 149 pounds with a 3-3 record (1 pin).

UW-Oshkosh commences its home schedule by hosting the 16th Annual Dan Gable Open on Saturday (Nov. 10) in Kolf Sports Center.
