Second-Ranked Warhawks Overpower Titans

UW-Whitewater validated its high national ranking with a 41-3 victory over the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team on Wednesday (Jan. 14) in Kolf Sports Center.

Matt Veneskey earned the lone UW-Oshkosh win by defeating Jake Anderson, 3-2, at 285 pounds. Veneskey's victory, which featured a takedown and later an escape, stopped a streak of nine consecutive wins by the three-time defending WIAC champion Warhawks.

UW-Whitewater, ranked second in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, began the match with Zac Denny's 17-4 win over Rashaam Hill at 125 pounds.

Austin Quartullo and Matt Adcock followed with 11-3 victories to give the Warhawks (11-1, 4-0 WIAC) a 12-0 lead. Quartullo defeated Jonathan Flores at 133 pounds while Adcock ousted David Leisgang at 141.

Elroy Perkin earned a pin for UW-Whitewater at 149 pounds. He stuck Hunter Mulock to the mat in 4:08.

Following Tom Gerszewski's 17-0 win over UW-Oshkosh's Lance Arendt at 157 pounds, UW-Whitewater's Connor Price pinned Derek Hermanson in 2:57 at 165.

UW-Whitewater went in front 32-0 on Mitchell Elmer's 4-0 victory over Michael Berg at 174 pounds.

The Warhawks concluded its streak of wins with convincing victories by Taylor Hildebrandt at 184 pounds and Shane Siefert at 197. Hildebrandt defeated Korey Kleinhans, 17-6, before Siefert ousted Alan Dahlke, 18-2.  

UW-Oshkosh (1-3, 1-2 WIAC) hosts fifth-ranked UW-La Crosse on Friday (Jan. 16) in Kolf Sports Center.
