Kulchytskyy Sets School Win Record At WIAC Championship

Nazar Kulchytskyy set the UW-Oshkosh record with his 133rd career victory at the WIAC Wrestling Championship on Saturday (Feb. 15) in La Crosse. The Titans finished fourth in the team event.

Kulchytskyy passed Rick Gruber, who totaled 131 wins from 1981-84. With one month left in his collegiate career, Kulchytskyy owns a 133-5 record with 63 pins.

UW-Oshkosh opened the tournament with a 31-18 triumph over UW-Eau Claire. The Titans then dropped a 37-8 decision to UW-La Crosse and a 20-18 contest to UW-Stevens Point in the third-place match.

Against the Blugolds, Kulchytskyy earned a pin over Matt Koch in 1:20. Brandon Clapper also recorded a pin in 5:58 against Justin Karkula. The Titans tacked on wins from Dan Schiferl over Jacob Hoffstatter, 18-6, and Tom Dahlke over Mathew Laugen, 3-1.

Kulchytskyy and Schiferl were both victorious against the Eagles. Kulchytskyy booked an 8-0 decision over Isaiah Erickson, while Schiferl counted a 10-2 win over Sean Huls.

UW-Stevens Point captured the first four weight classes against the Titans. Kulchytskyy then put UW-Oshkosh on the board with his 2:55 pin of Jamey Simmons. Dahlke followed with a 7-6 victory over Logan Hermsen, and Schiferl added a 5-1 decision over Andy Borchardt. Clapper's 50-second pin of Luke Hoffmann cut the Pointers' margin of victory to two points.

Schiferl's perfect day improved his season record to 26-4 (seven pins).

UW-Whitewater earned the conference title with a 35-9 win over UW-La Crosse.

The Titans will compete at the NCAA Division III West Regional on March 1 in Minneapolis, Minn.
