Titans Fall To 14th-Ranked Eagles

UW-La Crosse won the first four matches en route to a 37-7 victory over the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team on Friday (Jan. 17) in La Crosse.

The Eagles, ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, started the contest with Ryan Weinmann's 13-1 win over Scott Worlund at 125 pounds.

UW-La Crosse (8-2-1/3-0 WIAC) also took the next three bouts to take a 17-0 lead. The Eagles built their advantage on wins by Martino Balsiger at 133 pounds, Austin Schoen at 141 and Dylan Schaffer at 149. Balsiger defeated Craig Mason, 10-6, while Schoen ousted Joe Pelkey, 11-1. Schaffer closed the string of UW-La Crosse victories with his pin of Jerome Scott in 2:28.

UW-Oshkosh (2-5/2-2 WIAC) cut its deficit to 17-4 on Nazar Kulchytskyy's 16-4 win over Derek Weinmann at 157 pounds. Kulchytskyy, a two-time NCAA Division III champion, improved his record to 15-2 on the season.

Following an 8-6 victory by UW-La Crosse's Tyler Schneider over Tom Dahlke at 165 pounds, UW-Oshkosh's Dan Schiferl made the score 20-7 with his 8-2 triumph over Richard Carlson at 174 pounds. Schiferl now owns a 13-4 season record.

UW-La Crosse closed the match with three straight victories, including Mike Minske's forfeit at 197 pounds. The run began with Eric Twohey's 8-2 win over Korey Kleinhans at 184 pounds and ended with Jake Minske's pin of Brandon Clapper in 2:24 at 285.

UW-Oshkosh hosts NCAA Division II UW-Parkside on Thursday (Jan. 23) in Kolf Sports Center.
