Kulchytskyy, Schiferl Earn Titles At Pointer Open

Nazar Kulchytskyy and Dan Schiferl captured individual titles as UW-Oshkosh opened its 2013-14 wrestling season at the Pointer Open held Saturday (Nov. 9) in Stevens Point.

Kulchytskyy won the 165-pound weight class with a 4-3 victory over Nick Fishback of UW-Parkside, while Schiferl took the 174-pound division with an 11-4 triumph over Dylan Diebitz of UW-Stevens Point.

Kulchytskyy began action with pins in 2:07 of UW-Eau Claire's Ryan Behnke and 1:29 of UW-Parkside's Brett Scoles. He advanced to the final with an 18-3 win over Casey Kenealy of Concordia University Wisconsin.

Schiferl received a bye in the opening round before posting an 18-3 win over Bill Langford of UW-Stevens Point. He moved to the final with a 7-1 victory over UW-Parkside's Jason Anthony.

UW-Oshkosh's Craig Mason took second place at 133 pounds after losing a 7-0 decision to UW-Parkside's Joseph Her in the title match. Mason qualified for the final after posting a 3-1 victory over UW-Stevens Point's Lancy Fabry and pinning Kris Adams of UW-Stevens Point in 4:58.

The Titans had a pair of third-place finishers in Thomas Dahlke at 157 pounds and Brand Clapper at 285.

Dahlke lost his opening bout on a pin in 4:59 to Jamey Simmons of UW-Stevens Point. He then reeled off victories of 12-4 over UW-Stevens Point's Anthony Friese, 8-7 over Concordia University Wisconsin's Pierce Holtfreter, 13-5 over Itasca Community College's (Minn.) Marcus Riggle and 9-5 over Concordia University Wisconsin's Mason Mergener.

Clapper won three straight matches after suffering a 7-5 loss to Brady Stumpf of UW-Parkside in the opening round. Clapper followed his setback with a pin in 1:15 of UW-Stevens Point's Luke Hoffmann, a 1-0 win over Concordia University Wisconsin's Seth Kilkelly and a 2-0 victory over Itasca Community College's Tanner Grant.

Finishing fourth for UW-Oshkosh were Scott Worlund at 125 pounds and Jay Howarth at 197. Howarth compiled a 2-3 record, including a pin in 43 seconds of UW-Stevens Point's Steve Asmondy, while Worlund tallied a 1-3 mark, including a pin in 4:51 of Concordia University Wisconsin's Brandon Mayhew.

The Titans also records of 2-3 from Joe Pelkey and 0-1 from Tyler Sinda at 141 pounds, 0-2 from Jerome Scott at 149, 0-2 from both Ben Frieler and Jacob Moczynski at 174, 3-2 from Korey Kleinhans and 1-3 from Alan Dahlke at 184 and 0-3 from Michael Berg at 197.

UW-Oshkosh hosts the Dan Gable Open on Saturday (Nov. 16) in Kolf Sports Center.
