Titans Third At WIAC Championship, Qualify For Nationals

UW-Oshkosh matched its best team score of the season during a third-place finish at the WIAC Women's Gymnastics Championship held Sunday (March 2) in Whitewater.

The Titans compiled 185.575 points to duplicate their performance at a quadrangular hosted by Lindenwood University (Mo.) on Jan. 17. UW-Oshkosh's latest effort featured season-high scores of 46.825 points in the floor exercise and 46.65 on the balance beam.

UW-La Crosse captured its second WIAC title in three seasons and 22nd overall with 188.20 points. The Eagles were followed by the 188.075 points of second-place and defending champion UW-Whitewater.

Completing the team finishes were third-place UW-Oshkosh, fourth-place Hamline University (Minn.) with 185.525 points, fifth-place Winona State University (Minn.) with 185.225, sixth-place UW-Stout with 183.35, seventh-place UW-Eau Claire with 184.25 and eighth-place Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) with 177.80.

UW-Oshkosh owned a pair of fifth-place finishers, as Leane Blais tallied 9.50 points on the uneven bars and Krystal Walker 37.05 in the all-around competition.

Walker also ranked 17th on the uneven bars with 9.15 points, 20th in the floor exercise with 9.40 and 21st on the balance beam with 9.35. UW-Oshkosh teammates Elizabeth Kiel and Taylor Ennocenti shared Walker's ranking on the uneven bars and in the floor exercise, respectively.

UW-Oshkosh had two other contestants crack the top 13 on the balance beam and one on both the uneven bars and in the floor exercise. Competing on the balance beam, Kiel finished eighth with a score of 9.50 and Stephanie Gorman 13th at 9.475. Steffani Meusburger placed 10th on the uneven bars with a score of 9.35 and Emily Ryan 12th in the floor exercise with a mark of 9.475.

The Titans also had Kimberly Robertson finish 20th and Kylie Fischer 24th with scores of 9.375 and 9.325, respectively.

Leading UW-La Crosse's championship performance was Sheree Romesburg who won a pair of titles. She secured a first-place finish on the vault with a score of 9.60 and in the floor exercise with a mark of 9.65. She shared the vault crown with UW-Stout's Katherine Prouty and won the floor exercise for the second straight year. 

UW-Whitewater had three individuals produce first-place finishes. Allyse Dieringer was victorious on the uneven bars for the second consecutive season with a score of 9.675, while McKenzie Foster earned the balance beam crown with a score of 9.725. Katie Fiorilli claimed the all-around title with a score of 37.825.

The top six finishers in each event secured all-conference honors. Hamline University's Courtney Benson received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.

The conference meet also served as a West Region qualifier for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championship that will be held March 21-22 in Ithaca, N.Y.

UW-La Crosse, UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh all earned spots into the national event by placing among the top three teams. The Titans' appearance will be the first since they claimed the NCGA title in 2007.
