Titans Secure At Least A Share Of 12th WIAC Title

Jaimee Pitt poured in a career-high 18 points as UW-Oshkosh secured at least a share of the WIAC women's basketball title with a 91-71 victory at UW-Platteville on Saturday (Feb. 11).

The Titans never trailed the Pioneers and raced out to a 58-27 advantage at intermission by shooting 62.5 percent (20-32) from the floor during the first half. UW-Oshkosh scored its most points in a half since also tallying 58 during the first half against North Central College (Ill.) on Dec. 20, 2012.

UW-Oshkosh (21-2, 11-1 WIAC), ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, can clinch the outright WIAC title with a win in either of its last two regular season games. The Titans host 24th-ranked UW-Whitewater (19-4, 9-3 WIAC) on Wednesday (Feb. 15) and UW-Stout (7-16, 3-9 WIAC) next Saturday (Feb. 18).

The Titans captured their league-leading 12th WIAC championship and first since 2006. UW-Oshkosh, which finished second in the conference standings each of the past four seasons, also claimed WIAC titles in 1985, 1991-92, 1994-96, 1998-99, 2001 and 2004.

Pitt connected on 6 of 7 shots from the field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range, in 18 minutes off the bench to eclipse her previous career high of 12 points established earlier this season. Pitt, the seventh different Titan to lead the team in scoring this season, knocked down four 3-pointers and went 5-for-5 from the floor during the first half.

Eliza Campbell had 11 points and Isabella Samuels 10 to help UW-Oshkosh achieve its highest scoring output since defeating UW-Stout, 94-71, on Jan. 14, 2015.

UW-Oshkosh's Kylie Moe and Taylor Schmidt both recorded all nine of their points during the first half while Emma Melotik chipped in eight points. Schmidt moved into eighth on the school's scoring list with 1,210 career points.

Madeline Staples contributed six points and a team-leading six rebounds for the Titans, who also received a game-best four assists from Kendell Truttman as UW-Oshkosh reserves accounted for 55 points, 18 of the team's 33 rebounds and six of the squad's 12 assists.

UW-Oshkosh concluded the contest with considerable advantages in field goal (.542 to .429) and 3-point (.625 to .368) percentages as well as a 33-25 rebounding edge. The Titans converted 10 of 16 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc, including 7 of 10 in the first half.

Schmidt made a jump shot just 15 seconds into the game, and Melotik's 3-pointer with 5:17 remaining in the first quarter gave UW-Oshkosh the lead for good at 9-6.

Melotik's long-range basket sparked a string of eight straight made field goals by the Titans, culminating on a 3-pointer by Pitt that increased UW-Oshkosh's lead to 30-10 with 55 seconds left in the first quarter.

Campbell beat the first-period buzzer with a short jumper that provided the Titans a 34-12 lead. UW-Oshkosh's previous highest-scoring quarter this season was 27 points against UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 1.

Pitt drilled back-to-back 3-pointers in the span of 30 seconds to extend UW-Oshkosh's lead to 48-19 with 5:22 to play in the second quarter. Pitt tallied 10 points during the Titans' 14-2 scoring run that increased their lead to 56-19 at the 2:39 mark of the second period.

After trailing by as many as 37 points during the first half, UW-Platteville cut its deficit to 71-50 entering the fourth quarter. However, UW-Oshkosh maintained a lead of at least 18 points for the final 20:54 of action.

Morgan Horstman led UW-Platteville (6-17, 2-10 WIAC) with 14 points while Lexis Macomber and Allison Prestegaard tallied 11 apiece. Kassie Buchholz scored 10 points and Kassie Hansen registered six points and a team-leading six rebounds for the Pioneers.

The Titans also defeated the Pioneers by a 72-51 score on Jan. 11 in Oshkosh.

UW-Oshkosh's 21 wins after 23 contests are its most since the Titans opened the 1999 campaign with a 22-1 record.

UW-Oshkosh will attempt to clinch its first outright WIAC title since 1999 and avenge its lone league loss when it hosts UW-Whitewater on Wednesday in Kolf Sports Center. The Titans fell, 55-50, at UW-Whitewater on Jan. 18.
