Fast Start Ignites Titans' Win Over Blugolds

Taylor Schmidt had a game-high 14 points to lead the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team to a 57-44 wire-to-wire win over UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Feb. 10) in Eau Claire.

UW-Oshkosh scored the first 11 points of the game and maintained a lead for the final 39:34 of the contest.

Schmidt made 6 of 9 shots from the floor, including both of her attempts from 3-point range, while adding two assists and two steals.

UW-Oshkosh (18-4, 9-2 WIAC), ranked 13th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, remains in a first-place tie atop the league standings with UW-River Falls (18-4, 9-2 WIAC) with three games remaining.

UW-Oshkosh starters combined for 44 points on 60 percent (21-35) shooting from the field. Ashley Neustifter, Alex Richard and Marissa Selner had eight points each, while Eliza Campbell added six. Selner made all four of her shots from the floor, and Neusifter went 4-for-5. Campbell and Neustifter tied for the team lead with five rebounds apiece.

Chloe Pustina paced UW-Oshkosh with three assists and Morgan Kokta had six points and three steals off the Titan bench.

UW-Oshkosh shot 52 percent (26-50) from the field, including 57.7 percent (15-26) during the first half. The Titans also held advantages in rebounds (29-27), turnovers (15-9) and steals (9-4).

Richard and Schmidt combined for all of the points during UW-Oshkosh's 11-0 run to begin the game. Richard knocked down a jumper on the first possession of the contest, and Schmidt capped the opening skein with a 3-pointer at the 5:11 mark of the first quarter.

UW-Eau Claire responded with six consecutive points to cut its deficit to 11-6, but Campbell's layup at the buzzer gave UW-Oshkosh an 18-11 advantage after the first period.

A pair of layups by Selner increased the Titan lead to 29-17, and UW-Oshkosh held a 33-22 advantage at intermission following baskets by Isabella Samuels and Neustifter to end the half.

UW-Oshkosh extended its run to 10 consecutive points with three quick baskets to begin the third quarter. A layup by Selner concluded the run that provided the Titans a 39-22 lead with 8:15 to go in the third period.

Trailing 44-31 entering the fourth quarter, UW-Eau Claire cut its deficit to 48-39 on a layup by Erin O'Toole with 5:37 remaining, but Schmidt answered with a jumper just 17 seconds later, and UW-Oshkosh held a double-digit lead for the final 5:20 of the game.

UW-Oshkosh, which defeated UW-Eau Claire by a 65-53 score on Jan. 27 in Oshkosh, swept the season series with the Blugolds for the second time in the last three years.

O'Toole led UW-Eau Claire (10-12, 5-6 WIAC) with 13 points, while Madison Johnson added 12 points and six rebounds. Arien Becker had a game-high seven rebounds for the Blugolds.

Teenie Lichtfuss, who entered the game as UW-Eau Claire's second leading scorer at 14.4 points per game, was held to three points on just two field goal attempts. She paced the Blugolds with six assists and three steals.

UW-Oshkosh returns home to face UW-La Crosse on Saturday. The Titans beat the Eagles, 48-38, on Jan. 13 in La Crosse.
