Titans Part Ways With Eagles In Second Half

The UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team created separation with a long second-half run and cruised to a 67-45 victory over UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Feb. 11) in Kolf Sports Center.

Leading 32-31 with 17:22 remaining, the Titans rattled off 15 unanswered points as part of a 25-6 run for a 57-37 advantage at the 5:05 mark. Taylor Schmidt and Marissa Selner had seven points apiece during the run that saw UW-La Crosse miss 12 consecutive shots and commit five turnovers during a stretch of nearly 10 minutes.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 20th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, never trailed and collected a season-high 18 steals in holding its sixth straight opponent to less than 54 points. The Titans, who upped their winning streak to six games, are allowing a WIAC-leading mark of just 52.4 points per game.

Selner led the Titans with 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the floor in 16 minutes of action. Schmidt added 13 points, four assists and five steals. Alex Richard contributed 10 points, two blocks and two steals. Morgan Kokta had nine points off the bench on 3 of 5 shooting from behind the 3-point arc. Ashley Neustifter had a game-high five assists while Eliza Campbell pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh (19-3, 11-2 WIAC) remained in sole possession of first place in the league standings. UW-La Crosse (9-14, 4-10 WIAC), which lost to the Titans for the fifth time in six meetings, fell one spot to ninth.

Selner scored the first five points of the game as the Titans raced out to an 8-1 lead with 15:23 remaining in the first period. UW-La Crosse missed its first six shots from the field and committed four turnovers before Elise DeNoyer's 3-pointer made the score 8-4 at the 15:07 mark. UW-Oshkosh increased its advantage to 28-20 on a 3-pointer by Kokta with 2:13 left before halftime. It would be the Titans' last field goal of the period, as the Eagles closed to within 30-25 at the break.

Following its game-changing run in the second half, UW-Oshkosh extended its lead to 61-39 on consecutive layups by Madeline Staples. The Titans held their largest advantage of the game of 24 points after another layup by Staples made the score 67-43 with 93 seconds left. The Eagles converted just 6 of 29 (20.7 percent) shots from the field in the second half.

UW-Oshkosh ended the game shooting 41.2 percent (21-51) from the field against the top field goal percentage defense in the WIAC. UW-La Crosse entered the game holding opponents to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor.

The Titans also shot 25 percent (3-12) from 3-point range and 71 percent (22-31) from the free throw line. UW-Oshkosh held advantages in turnovers (16-24), blocks (5-2) and steals (18-12).

UW-La Crosse's DeNoyer had nine points and six rebounds, all in the first half. Jenna Anderson chipped in with eight points and two steals for the Eagles, who also received seven points apiece from Maggi Bishop and Sydney Kannel. Bishop and MaKenzie Miller led UW-La Crosse with three steals and eight rebounds, respectively.

The Eagles finished the game shooting 30.8 percent (16-52) from the field, 25 percent (1-4) from beyond the 3-point arc and 80 percent (12-15) from the foul line. UW-La Crosse outrebounded UW-Oshkosh, 36-35.

UW-Oshkosh travels to UW-Superior (16-6, 10-3 WIAC) on Saturday (Feb. 14). The Titans, who can clinch at least a share of the WIAC title with a win, defeated the Yellowjackets, 86-52, on Jan. 3 in Oshkosh.
