Titans Get Defensive In Win Over Eagles

The UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team limited Edgewood College to one field goal in the last 16 minutes of the first half, set a school record for blocked shots and rolled to a 62-40 victory in Madison on Tuesday (Nov. 25).

Edgewood College (1-3) held a 4-2 lead after hitting its first two shots from the field. UW-Oshkosh (5-0) responded with eight consecutive points, including a pair of baskets by Alex Richard to take a 10-4 advantage with 16:46 left in the first half.

The Eagles trimmed their deficit to 10-6 on a jumper by Courtney Spangler, but only made one more shot from the floor during the final 16 minutes of the period.

A jumper by Eliza Campbell gave UW-Oshkosh a 16-6 lead, and a basket by Ashley Neustifter increased the Titans' advantage to 23-9 with 7:31 left in the half. The teams combined for just one point over the next four minutes until a layup by Spangler made the score 24-11 at the 3:14 mark. Spangler's basket was the first for the Eagles in nearly 13 minutes.

UW-Oshkosh, ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, scored the last six points of the first half to take a 30-11 lead into the break. The Titans blocked 10 Edgewood College shots during the opening period, including five during a six-minute stretch, while holding the Eagles to just 14.8 percent (4-27) shooting from the field.

UW-Oshkosh scored the first five points of the second half and then seven of the next nine to take a 42-13 lead with 15:41 to play. The Titans' 12-2 run featured five points from Kuehl and a three-pointer by Neustifter.

Edgewood College got as close as 20 points on two occasions, with the last being a 55-35 score with 2:40 remaining.

UW-Oshkosh blocked 12 shots in the contest to establish a school record. The total included four blocks by Richard and three by Kuehl.

Campbell compiled 15 points, five rebounds and two blocks for the Titans, while Richard totaled 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Campbell was 6-of-10 shooting from the field and Richard 5-of-7.

UW-Oshkosh also received nine points and seven rebounds from Kuehl and eight points and four assists from Neustifter.

Rachel Pope's 15 points, 14 of which were scored in the second half, led Edgewood College. Spangler added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Eagles.

UW-Oshkosh posted shooting percentages of 38.3 (23-60) from the field, 35 (7-20) behind the three-point line and 60 (9-15) from the free-throw stripe. The Titans committed 13 turnovers and won the rebounding battle, 45-35.

Edgewood College finished the game shooting 25.5 percent (14-55) from the field. The Eagles made 11 of their 14 free throws (78.6 percent), but just one of their nine three-point attempts (11.1 percent). Edgewood College turned the basketball over 14 times.

Tuesday's contest marked the first meeting since Edgewood College defeated UW-Oshkosh, 60-51, on Dec. 21, 2010.

The Titans take on 24th-ranked St. Norbert College on Saturday (Nov. 29) in De Pere.
