Division I Phoenix Record Exhibition Victory Over Titans

NCAA Division I UW-Green Bay used a late first-half run to pull away for a 61-34 exhibition victory over the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team on Thursday (Nov. 6) in Green Bay.   

The teams were tied at 8 with 8:53 remaining in the first half, and it was a one-possession game until UW-Green Bay took a 17-12 lead on a layup with 4:32 left. The basket was part of a 13-2 run that gave the Phoenix a 26-14 advantage at halftime.

UW-Oshkosh forced 11 turnovers and limited UW-Green Bay to 41.4 percent shooting in the first half.

The Phoenix scored the first 12 points of the second period and led, 36-14, with 16:24 remaining and held the Titans at bay the rest of the game.

UW-Oshkosh, which advanced to the third round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship, entered the game ranked fifth by D3hoops.com. UW-Green Bay, which has played in 17 consecutive postseason tournaments, was picked to win its 17th straight Horizon League title.

The Titans shot 30 percent (12-of-40) from the field and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the free throw line.

Eliza Campbell, Alex Richard and Taylor Schmidt led UW-Oshkosh with six points each. Campbell was 3-of-6 shooting from the floor and added a team-best two steals.

Madeline Staples had five points, while Marissa Selner and Alicia Tollefson both added four points.

Selner had a team-high five rebounds, followed by four each by Katelyn Kuehl, Richard and Tollefson. Schmidt and Staples led the Titans with two assists apiece.

UW-Green Bay shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the free throw line. The Phoenix outrebounded the Titans, 41-28, and forced 24 turnovers.

UW-Green Bay's Mehryn Kraker had a game-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. The Phoenix also received 12 points from Sam Terry and seven points and a game-best eight rebounds from Mariah Monke.

The last time UW-Oshkosh played a NCAA Division I opponent in an exhibition game was the University of Wisconsin on Nov. 8, 2009. UW-Oshkosh lost that contest to the Badgers, 106-39.

The Titans begin their regular season schedule against Hamline University (Minn.) on Nov. 15 in Eau Claire.
