Titans Storm Back For Road Win Over Blue Devils

UW-Oshkosh was down 13 points before dominating the second half for a 74-62 women's basketball victory over UW-Stout on Saturday (Jan. 18) in Menomonie.

The Titans (15-1/6-1 WIAC), ranked 19th in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com, scored 54 points during the second half after counting just 20 in the first. UW-Oshkosh made 30 free throws in the final 17 minutes of play.

Katelyn Kuehl sank 13 free throws on her way to 16 points and eight rebounds. Taylor Schmidt tallied 16 points while adding five assists and three steals for UW-Oshkosh.

Both teams were ice cold to start the day, with UW-Stout hitting just 1-of-12 shots from the field and UW-Oshkosh 1-of-11. The Blue Devils did their damage early at the foul line, with Jenna Goldsmith's free throw giving her team a 9-4 lead.

Sami Schoeder got things going with back-to-back three-pointers that put UW-Stout ahead, 17-7, with 9:37 left the first half. Sara Bedford then knocked down a long-distance jumper to give the Blue Devils a 26-13 advantage.

Trailing 32-20 at intermission, the Titans scored seven straight points to begin the second period. Following jumpers from Schmidt and Marissa Selner, Kuehl buried a three-pointer to make it 32-27. UW-Stout (6-11/2-6 WIAC) settled down and eventually increased its lead to 40-32 on Haley Froehlich's hoop with 12:50 remaining.

Maggie Novak splashed a triple to pull UW-Oshkosh within five. The Titans then tied the score at 40 on a pair of free throws from Kuehl. UW-Oshkosh grabbed its first lead of the contest (55-54) when Schmidt finished a three-point play with 4:50 left.

UW-Oshkosh's defense continued to get stops and takeaways. Schmidt proceeded to hit a lay-up in traffic and drew the foul for a three-point play. Stecker tacked on another three-point play with 1:36 left to put the Titans ahead, 65-56.

Stecker has now scored 56 points in her last 53 minutes. She finished with 11 points and six rebounds. Alex Richard came off the bench to mark eight points and five rebounds.

UW-Oshkosh compiled 38 percent (18-47) shooting from the field, including 2-of-16 accuracy (13 percent) from three-point range. The Titans made 36-of-47 free throws (77 percent) while committing 15 turnovers.

The Blue Devils shot 36 percent (20-55) from the field, 33 percent (3-9) behind the arc and 76 percent (19-25) at the charity stripe. Sami Schoeder topped UW-Stout with 10 points and three steals. Brea Boomer collected a game-high nine rebounds.

The Titans will visit UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday (Jan. 22).
