Titans Split Shutouts To Begin Florida Swing

Jill Vondrak threw a two-hit shutout during UW-Oshkosh's 8-0 victory over Hamilton College (N.Y.) on Sunday (March 23) in Clermont, Fla.

The Titans (5-1) also fell to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2-0, in their second game of the day.

Vondrak (3-0) retired 14 consecutive batters from the first through sixth innings. She finished with five strikeouts and just one walk.

During the third inning against Hamilton, Hayden Krueger led off with a solo home run to centerfield. Katie Koepsel and Tess Fadness followed with back-to-back doubles. After two outs, Kassie Krueger got caught in a rundown that allowed Fadness to steal home and make it 3-0.

The Titans added unearned runs with one in the fourth inning and three more during the fifth. The fifth frame featured Taylor Loew's RBI single and sacrifice flies from Kassie Krueger and Emily Mallek.

Fadness ended the game with a run-scoring groundball in the sixth inning. Kelly Leonard took the loss, allowing four earned runs in 5.2 frames.

Pitching was also the story in the nightcap, with MIT's Ellie Fodor striking out seven of the first nine batters. She totaled 13 K over seven innings for the win.

The Engineers tallied both their runs with two outs in the third inning. After a Mackenzie Donnelly double, Alexandra Marshall singled her home. Sarah Van Belleghem tacked on a run-scoring double to earn the 2-0 lead.

UW-Oshkosh threatened in the fourth frame using a hit-by-pitch, walk and passed ball. Fodor was able to escape with a strikeout and fly out.

The Titans' lone hits were a Haley Bayreuther single in the first inning and a Lindsey Luedke single in the seventh.

Sara Brunlieb took the defeat, allowing two runs with three strikeouts in six innings.

UW-Oshkosh takes on Calvin College and nationally ranked Luther College tomorrow (March 24).
