Titans Run To 13th Place At NCAA Championship

Jordan Carpenter earned his first All-America award to lead UW-Oshkosh to a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship held Saturday (Nov. 21) at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne.

The Titans, who received an at-large berth into the 32-team championship, tallied 345 points to record its 23rd top 15 national finish in school history.

UW-Eau Claire, which owned three of the meet's top 14 runners, scored 135 points to win its first NCAA title. Williams College (Mass.) finished second to the Blugolds with 144 points, while State University of New York at Geneseo placed third with 209, St. Olaf College (Minn.) fourth with 211 and defending champion North Central College (Ill.) fifth with 254.

Completing the list of teams finishing in the top 10 were sixth-place Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Calif.) with 276 points, seventh-place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College (Calif.) with 290, eighth-place Wabash College (Ind.) with 292, ninth-place UW-La Crosse with 300 and 10th-place Amherst College (Mass.) with 303.

Carpenter finished 13th among the meet's 278 runners by completing the 8,000-meter course with a time of 24:38.70. He placed 45th at last year's championship after ranking 108th in 2013 and 264th in 2011.

Assisting Carpenter in compiling UW-Oshkosh's team score were Charlend Howard, Wal Khat, Roberto Lara and Tyler Miletti. Howard finished 50th with a time of 25:10.90, while Khat placed 125th in 25:38.80, Lara 136th in 25:42.70 and Miletti 141st in 25:45.20.

The Titans also had Joe Zack finish 204th in 26:06.10 and Brian McKnight 260th in 26:46.40.

UW-Platteville's Ian LaMere, who finished fifth at last year's championship, captured this year's individual title with a Division III championship-record time of 23:35.40.

Josh Thorson of UW-Eau Claire placed a distant second to LaMere with a time of 24:15.00, while Bijan Mazaheri of Williams College ranked third in 24:21.40, Zach Plank of North Central College fourth in 24:26.90 and Jake Campbell of St. Olaf College fifth in 24:31.30.

UW-Oshkosh was hosting the NCAA Division III Men's & Women's Cross Country Championships for the third time (1999 & 2011).
