Titans Place 12th At NCAA Cross Country Championship

UW-Oshkosh concluded another successful season by finishing 12th time at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship held Saturday (Nov. 23) at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex in Hanover, Ind.

The Titans, who were appearing at the championship for the 22nd time, totaled 357 points among the 32 competing teams. UW-Oshkosh's previous appearances featured national titles won in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 2002.

St. Olaf College (Minn.) placed three runners in the top 11 to edge two-time defending champion North Central College (Ill.), 86-84, for the team title. It was the first NCAA Division III championship for the Oles.

Rounding out the top five teams were third-place UW-La Crosse with 155 points, fourth-place Washington University (Mo.) with 167 and Williams College (Mass.) with 218.

Other teams in the top 10 were sixth-place Central College (Iowa) with 240 points, seventh-place Middlebury College (Vt.) with 297, eighth-place Dickinson College (Pa.) with 298, ninth-place UW-Eau Claire with 305 and 10th-place Haverford College (Pa.) with 351. Johns Hopkins University (Md.) finished 11th with 355 points.

Sean Kutz, who was running at the championship for the third time, paced UW-Oshkosh in the individual competition with his 63rd-place finish. He completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:39. Kutz previously finished 34th in 2011 and 178th in 2008.

UW-Oshkosh concluded its team scoring with the finishes of McKena Ramos, Derek Johnsrud, Jordan Carpenter and Kenny Halloran. Ramos placed 92nd with a time of 25:52, while Johnsrud finished 106th in 25:56, Carpenter 108th in 25:58 and Halloran 121st in 26:03.

Also competing at the meet for the Titans were Erik Hofferber and Ryne Scopp. Hofferber placed 127th in 26:06 and Scopp 217th in 26:42. Hofferber previously finished 211th in 2011 and 223rd in 2010.

Michael LeDuc of Connecticut College took first place among the meet's 275 runners with his time of 24:29. John Crain of North Central College finished second in 24:33 and Grant Wintheiser of St. Olaf College third in 24:34.

The women's team champion was Johns Hopkins University (Md.).
