Titans Finish Third At NCAA Midwest Regional

UW-Oshkosh had a pair of top-13 runners as it finished third at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Midwest Regional held Saturday (Nov. 16) at the Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill.

Five-time defending champion North Central College (Ill.) scored 56 points to easily capture the team title. The Cardinals owned five of the meet's top 18 runners, including John Crain who completed the 8,000-meter course in a first-place time of 24:17.

Washington University (Mo.) finished a distant second in the team standings with 101 points. The Bears were followed in the 39-team meet by third-place UW-Oshkosh with 118 points, fourth-place UW-Eau Claire with 128 and fifth-place UW-La Crosse with 133. All four teams, along with North Central College, are expected to represent the Midwest Region at next Saturday's (Nov. 23) NCAA Division III Championship in Hanover, Ind.

Rounding out the top-10 teams at the regional were sixth-place University of Chicago (Ill.) with 220 points, seventh-place Wheaton College (Ill.) with 233, eighth-place UW-Stout with 234, ninth-place UW-Platteville with 270 and 10th-place Augustana College (Ill.) with 277.

Sean Kutz and Derek Johnsrud led UW-Oshkosh during the individual portion of the regional. Kutz finished third among the 275 runners with a time of 24:27, while Johnsrud placed 13th in 24:46.

Also figuring in UW-Oshkosh's team scoring were Erik Hofferber, McKena Ramos and Kenny Halloran. Hofferber finished 25th in 25:04, Ramos 36th in 25:19 and Halloran 44th in 25:37. Ramos had the distinction of recording the highest finish by a freshman.

Other UW-Oshkosh participants were Jordan Carpenter and Ryne Scopp. Carpenter finished 47th in 25:49 and Scopp 52nd in 25:55.

Completing the list of runners finishing in the top five were Wylie Mangelsdorf of Principia College (Ill.), Patrick Jenkins of UW-Stout and Kevin Sparks of Washington University. Mangelsdorf ranked second with a time of 24:24, Jenkins fourth in 24:32 and Sparks fifth in 24:33.
